  Notes and References

  Preface

1 Camden’s debt to Burghley and Robert Cecil is from BL, Additional MS 36294, fo. 24. Burghley’s role as the teenage Elizabeth’s backstairs fixer is from J. Guy, The Children of Henry VIII (Oxford, 2013), pp. 136–7.

2 The criticisms expressed here are my own, but similar conclusions were reached by C. Haigh, ‘Introduction’, in The Reign of Elizabeth I, ed. C. Haigh (London, 1984), pp. 6–11. For the dates and circumstances of composition of Camden’s Annales, see P. Collinson, ‘One of Us? William Camden and the Making of History’, TRHS, 6th Series, 8 (1998), pp. 151–63. For a discussion of the limitations of Camden’s work, see P. Collinson, ‘William Camden and the Anti-Myth of Elizabeth: Setting the Mould?’, in The Myth of Elizabeth, ed. S. Doran and T. S. Freeman (London, 2003), pp. 79–93.

3 See, for instance, Annales, Or, The History of the Most Renowned and Victorious Princesse Elizabeth, tra
ns. R. Norton (London, 1635), sig. b; P. Collinson, ‘Elizabeth I and the Verdicts of History’, HR, 76 (2003), p. 480.

7 For an earlier attempt to advocate this line, see J. E. Neale, ‘The Sayings of Queen Elizabeth’, History, 10 (1925), pp. 212–33.

8 Only the State Papers, Domestic, are covered by the Victorian printed calendars for the last years of the reign. After July 1589, the State Papers, Foreign, cease to be calendared, and, instead, increasingly rudimentary, consolidated digests of documents cover the years until December 1596. Thereafter, nothing before 1603 is printed, leaving major sub-collections to be searched by trial and error, including State Papers, France, Spain, Holland, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Russia and Turkey. A significant quantity of Burghley’s and Robert Cecil’s correspondence now at Hatfield House for the years after 1583 is abstracted in HMC, Hatfield MSS, III–XIV, and some selected documents are printed in full by Murdin. However, large swathes of highly important papers in the BL, Cotton, Lansdowne, Harleian and Additional collections (to name but four) are not printed or calendared at all.
