  “So it was what, a holiday gone wrong? That’s how you ended up in my clinic?”

  “Something like that,” Zed confirmed.

  “How…”

  “Enough,” he said kindly. “There will be time for your barrage of questions later. Right now I need to assume command of my fleet and convince the Freni to… well, come to think of it, I don’t think the Freni will be as much of an issue now.”

  He was right. When Serena looked at the monitor she saw that the Freni ships were now nothing but a speck in the distance. Apparently they did not have as much of an appetite for enforcing their laws in the face of a plethora of battleships as they did when they thought they were hunting a lone shuttle.

  “I guess they won’t be,” Serena said, a slow grin spreading over her face. “You kept this a huge secret.”

  “Did I?” He raised a brow at her and let a smirk pass over his face.

  “Yes,” she said. “You did.”

  “Everybody on the last ship did call me commander,” he reminded her. “The clue was in the title.”

  “Yes, but I thought… well, I didn’t think commander meant commander of the galaxy!”

  “Not the galaxy,” Zed smiled. “Several galaxies, as it happens. It’s not as impressive as it sounds; they’re mostly empty space. There’s only a thousand or so planets in my territory.”

  Her head spinning, Serena tried to make sense of it all. “Several galaxies, thousands of planets, and millions of men under your control… and you wanted me? Out of all those places and all those people? Why?”

  Zed pressed a passionate kiss to her mouth, his hand cupping her bare rear, which still bore the marks of his hand prints and which still ached where his thick cock had plundered her final frontier.

  “It’s an Earth saying, I think, that one always wants what one cannot have. I suppose in your case, I wanted what I could not command. From the moment I met you, Serena, you have challenged me in ways others dare not. I think you always will. It is what makes you the perfect mate, if not quite the perfect pet.”

  “What other secrets do you have hidden away?”

  Zed smiled and swept her up against his body, his power, strength, and care making her the safest, most cherished pet in any galaxy anywhere. Golden eyes danced with love and good humor as he left her with yet another of his oh-so-enigmatic replies.

  “You’ve got a lifetime to find out.”
