Other books by Kinsella include two collections of poetry co-written with Ann Knight, and several works of nonfiction, including a biography of Cree painter Allen Sapp. “Lieberman in Love,” a short story from the book Red Wolf, Red Wolf, was adapted for film, which won an Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film at the 1996 Academy Awards.
Kinsella is best known for his bestselling novel Shoeless Joe, which was later adapted into the movie Field of Dreams. The hugely popular film featured Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, Ray Liotta, and James Earl Jones. The famous expression from the movie, “If you build it, he will come” (often misquoted as “If you build it, they will come”), and the very phrase “field of dreams,” continue to be used affectionately in the American vernacular.
Shoeless Joe won the Canadian Authors Association Prize, the Alberta Achievement Award, the Books in Canada First Novel Award, and the Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship. Kinsella won the Leacock Award in 1987 and in 1993 was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2005, he was awarded the Order of British Columbia, and in 2009, he was awarded the George Woodcock Lifetime Achievement Award. He has been presented with honorary degrees from Laurentian University, University of Victoria, and the Open Learning Institute.
In 1997, W. P. Kinsella suffered brain damage from being struck by a car while walking near his home. He was unable to produce any fiction until 2011, when he published Butterfly Winter, winner of the Colophon Prize. Kinsella continues to publish nonfiction, is a noted tournament Scrabble player, and lives in Yale, British Columbia.
