“These are good things, Commander,” Cain said. “Really good things.”

The last jump executed flawlessly to the edge of the Cygnus gravity well.

“Take us in, standard acceleration, three gravities actual,” Rand ordered. Fickle had been forced to give up his position on the bridge. Brayson sat there now, next to Pickles.

“Lieutenant Chirit, please transmit our greetings to the SES, include our ETA. Send the messages we have drafted, and then request a meeting between me, Commander Daksha, Briz, Jolly, Holly, Admiral Jesper, and Dr. Johns. We would like that date and time confirmed before anything else. That meeting will happen before anyone else leaves the ship,” Captain Rand ordered.

  “Aye, aye, sir,” Chirit chirped.

Jolly appeared next to the captain’s chair. “I look forward to that conversation, Captain. I have high hopes that our issues will be resolved in short order.”

“What did you and that Rabbit do?” Rand asked skeptically.

“Hedged our bet, I believe is the correct term. We have already transmitted our findings to Holly, to let him analyze what we’ve come up with. His logic will come to the right conclusion. We thought it better to present the information while we’re still a long ways off. Just in case,” Jolly explained.

  “We will see,” Rand allowed.

This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, businesses, places, events and incidents are either the products of the author’s imagination or used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.

  The Free Trader Series

The Free Trader series is currently six books, soon to be nine of prequel adventure where you get to meet each of the species mentioned in the Cygnus Space Opera.

A ‘cat and his human minions fight to bring peace to humanity. Compared to Andre Norton, David Gemmell, and Larry Niven, the Free Trader series takes you to a colonized world across the galaxy where engineered animals help the people survive and become masters of the planet. After a devastating civil war, humanity and its creations rise again. The Free Trader finds himself at a crossroads: can he and his ‘cat prevent a repeat of past mistakes as they rebuild civilization?

Here’s what some reviewers had to say about the Free Trader…

“Most authors can't make a animal character believable. This one does. Craig Martelle has a great imagination and can put it down on paper for you to enjoy also, just like the great writers of the golden age. His writing is very reminiscent of their work.”

“very good read. reminds me of Andre Norton.”

“This series is excellent. The characters are well developed and the story line is compelling. As a long time fan of Post Apocalyptic books by Larry Niven and others as well as PA games, I would encourage anyone who enjoys Apocalyptic, Survival, and high adventure books to read this series.”

Shout out to Thomas Ogden who is a stalwart supporter. He’s also kicking diabetes’ ass through diet and exercise. I’m at risk for that disease as it runs in my family, so Thomas’s fight is personal. It is motivating to see Thomas take charge and make the changes necessary to stay in front of it. In honor of Thomas, I named one of the Marines “Ogden.” Thank you for joining the team.

A side note in how I address acceleration and velocity in the Cygnus series. I use gravities for acceleration – that’s 9.8m/sec2. When I say a ship is traveling at 480 gees, that is my shorthand style for 480 times a standard one gravity acceleration. Acceleration and deceleration for the Cygnus-12 are never more than 20 gravities with the crew in their acceleration couches, because we cannot have them turned to mush. Speeds in space are relative and can get complicated. I use the space math website – for my calculations (https://www.cthreepo.com/lab/math1/). I know it may seem odd that someone who earned their undergrad in humanities tries to get the math right, but I do. I used to be a math and science guy, having tested a 770 on the math part of the SAT. I was 25 when I took it.

The Just In Time readers have been fabulous. For some ungodly reason, I used the term “exuberation.” What the hell does that even mean? Why would Word, or Grammarly allow that? They all did, but we changed it to exuberance, because who doesn’t like a little trickeration every now and then? I also used the phrase “laugh mercilessly.” Since I wasn’t talking about someone angling to take over the world from their island lair, I fixed that, too. Incredible job by the JIT readers to help me maintain clarity and deliver a better story that flows well. No hiccups.

I’ll list them again because they deserve the shout out.

It’s been a busy month! I went to the Smarter Artist Summit in Austin, Texas for a few days in April. The guys from Sterling & Stone put on a great show and I picked up a bunch of tidbits about this little thing known as the author business, but most importantly, I met a lot of great people.

It was Austin, so I tried to eat my body weight in Tex-Mex. That didn’t work out so well.

The good news? I’m no longer craving Tex-Mex.

The sun has returned and I mean it’s really returned. I start my day way early, 3am kind of early. It’s already light at that time of day. By being a full-time author, I’m home, which means that our dog Phyllis has adopted my schedule. She gets her morning walk sometime between 3:30 am and 4:30 am, eating breakfast as soon as we get back to the house. And then she eats dinner between three and four in the afternoon.

I’ll go to bed at night again sometime in August. Otherwise, it’s light when I go to bed, light when I get up. I feel like such a slug!

But that is what it’s like in the sub-Arctic. At this time of year, the sun rises and pseudo-sets in the north. In the winter, it’s the exact opposite. It rises and sets in the south. Only for a small part of each year does it rise in the east and set in the west as most of the world is used to.

I got the greenhouse set up so I think we’ll make a run to the nursery this weekend to pick up a few plants. It still gets down toward frostiness at night, but the greenhouse stays nice and warm. Three tomatoes, two peppers, one zucchini, and cabbage. That will be this year’s haul. We may do some herbs, but we’ll grow those in pots.

/>   We bought this cilantro in a can thing. It’s on a small table in front of the window. It supposedly is going to give us much cilantro right inside. I have high hopes for this little gem, too.

I still haven’t fixed my tractor – next up is heating the bolt, then we’ll see if we can crack it free. I may have to recruit help. I hate asking people for help, so we’ll see how much I have to heat it to get it break free.

And then I get to move the tractor and walk-behind snow thrower to the shed, clearing the space to move the picnic table to the outside deck. And then we’ll have space to clean out some of the garage. My truck is so much bigger than my old Liberty, I need to move some stuff to be able to get more of the truck inside.

Cygnus Arrives – Humanity Returns Home. I’m glad this one is done and available to all the good people out there. A series really needs that third book. I expect I’ll continue the series because I love space opera!

We shall see. I have a lot on my plate, including the next three Free Trader books – these will probably be a little shorter than the others in the series, but they are good stories with the highest quality covers. And it’s my intent to release them in rapid succession later this summer.

Break’s over – back to writing Nomad Avenged, the 7th book in the Terry Henry Walton Chronicles.
