“The phone in your room is ringing,” Shirou said in a much louder voice. Still holding her, he asked, “Who would be calling your room at this time of night?”

“My parents don’t know I’m here yet, and my friends would call my private cell phone number. Remind me to give you that number before you leave. It must be my boss. He probably tried my work cell and when I didn’t answer…why am I explaining myself to you?” She gave him a pointed look. “What happened to trust? Shouldn’t that work both ways if we’re going to have a long-distance relationship for a while?”

“A very short while,” he replied smoothly. “I have a feeling I need to keep you close and well satisfied at all times. To answer your question, I assume you told me because…I asked.”

  The phone stopped ringing.

“That remains to be seen, because you’re about to renew your contract, aren’t you? And I like my job, and I’m not giving it up for you or anyone else.”

There was something about that grin of his that unnerved her.

“What are you going to tell your boss about me and the banquet situation?”

She matched his smile. “I’m going to tell him it was a bit slippery at first, but after some intense negotiating, I got you right where I want you.”

“Right where you want me, huh?” Shirou went in for a kiss, and Zola danced her way out of his hold.

“Yup.” She nodded while backing her way toward her room. “Right where I want your fine ass.” She turned and walked into her room, yelling out, “Mr. Tate will say, ‘Zola’s magic touch strikes again,’ and I will politely remind him that I am taking the rest of the week off.”

“Only because I don’t want to be anywhere else,” he muttered under his breath.

  “I heard that.”

He laughed. “Hey, did you say you got the rest of the week off? Then you can come with me to Washington…”

  “Don’t even think about it.”

“Zoe…you’re coming with me to Washington,” Shirou argued, marching back into her room.

“No, Shirou, get out of this bathroom! I’m serious.”

The door clicked closed and the shower went on.
