Hearts in the City

Olivia peered furtively though a sheer white veil as she made her way up the aisle, toward her prince. Alistair watched as she made her way toward him, his eyes never once leaving her. Seeing him there waiting to meet her, removed any apprehension she’d felt leading up to today. It felt right. It was right. Everything was going to be okay. This was how it was meant to be. What could be better than preparing to spend the rest of her life with the man she loved so dearly?
The vows contained special passages Olivia and Alistair had put together. They both promised to be the air each other breathed, pill for each other's sickness, and other niceties the congregation couldn't help but smile at upon hearing.
She’d told herself long ago that marriage was for the weak and those not independent enough to be alone. Yet, here she was, the wife of one Mr. Alistair Davenport, happier than she’d ever been. In the short six months they’d been together she had grown to love him more than she thought her heart could handle. And he loved her as much as she loved him. He’d been the cool, calm force who’d helped her put the pieces of her life back together when she’d thought her world had crumbled for good. He’d helped her believe in love again.
She thought of the baby growing in her belly. She imagined the life she and Alistair would provide for their child. They had all the resources, both financial and otherwise to provide a safe, loving environment in a beautiful home. They’d decided against putting the Vanier house on the market, choosing instead to make it their own. The house belonging to her mother that she thought she’d never leave now stood with a for sale sign on the front lawn.
The reception took place the Radcliffe Country Club where no expense had been spared.
“I seem to recall meeting you for the first time in this same type of setting almost one year ago,” Alistair said.
“And I remember you flirting like crazy with me.”
A slight, yet non-serious frown appeared on Alistair’s face. “Come on, you know you loved every minute of it.”
Olivia smiled a toothy grin. “I thought you were a player, remember? I was just letting you do what players do best—play.”
“Either way, I’m officially now the luckiest man on the planet.”
“And don’t you ever forget it.” Olivia laughed softly and gazed deeply into the eyes that had entranced her all those months ago. Her heart had belonged to someone else then.
Alistair grinned, his face turning serious just as quickly. “My heart will always be yours, Liv...always.”
“Oh...baby...you’ve already made me happier than I ever thought I could be.” Olivia was overwhelmed by the love she felt for him right then.
The exchange between them was so intimate and so private it was as though they were the only ones in the reception hall.
“Just wait and see. It’s only going to get better from here.” Alistair gazed lovingly into her eyes and went in for a kiss as they sat at the bridal party table. All at once a roar went up from the crowd and the tinkling of glasses began.
Olivia smiled broadly with a look of amusement. “What do you say, we give ‘em an encore?”
“Oh I do love the way you think, Mrs. Olivia Davenport,” Alistair said, his lips covering hers again with a warm, sensual kiss.
