Miss You, Mina

“Sure,” I said, handing my sister a piece of paper and smiling at her. “I bet you she’ll look really pretty in pink.”

There were a few problems with the Great Gold Family Summer Vacation. For one thing, there was nothing great about it. For another, it wasn’t just the Gold family.
When I was little, we went on a lot of trips with my parents’ friends, the Kaplan-Novaks and the Schwebers. And now that family vacation was back, the Kaplan-Novaks and the Schwebers were back, too. And so were their kids.
We met them at the car rental place by the airport. While my parents filled out forms, I grabbed a paper cup of lukewarm water and ducked outside.
“Isn’t this awesome?” Dillie Kaplan-Novak said to me right away.
I looked around. There were junky cars, tired tourists, heat waves rising from the black cement—but definitely no awesomeness. “Um, what?”
“This!” Dillie rocked back and forth on the balls of her feet. “I’ve been so psyched for this trip. I can’t believe we get to go away for the whole summer. It’ll be just like the old days.”
“Right. Totally.” I was starting to get that feeling in my stomach. Like last summer at the amusement park when I’d eaten one too many bags of cotton candy.
You never know, Mina had told me at our “See Ya Soon” party. (Because best friends never say “good-bye.”) Maybe you’ll like them.
Yeah, Sam had added. You might decide to trade us in for new best friends.
You’ve got nothing to worry about, I thought, missing them already.

My mom rolled down the windows, and that unmistakable beachy smell filled the car: salt, sand, and coconut oil. I took a deep breath. This beach road was a lot different than the ones in New Jersey. Where were all the T-shirt shops and ice-cream stands? Where was the amusement park? All this place had were beach houses, as far as I could see.
“So, uh, where’s the boardwalk?” I finally asked my mother.
“Oh, I don’t think there is one, honey,” she said.
“No boardwalk? So what do kids do here?” I asked her.
“Well…” She shrugged. “I guess they go to the beach.”
Every day? For eight weeks?
Finally, we turned off the main road. Before I knew it, we were driving toward a big house with a sign on the front that said ISLE BE BACK.
“Is that it?” I asked my mother. “Wow, it’s pretty cool! That roof deck looks like fun. And it has a pool! And a tennis court, too?” I almost hated to admit it, but this place was going to be awesome!
“Huh?” my mom said absentmindedly. “Tennis court? Pool? Oh no, hon. That’s not it.” She laughed. Then she drove right by the house and pointed to another one behind it. “There you go. The Drift Inn. That’s us.” She turned off the car’s engine.
I’d seen some big houses, but this thing was out of control. Way bigger than the other house I’d been looking at. So big that there wasn’t even room for a tennis court or pool around it. I’d assumed it was some kind of old hotel or school or something.
And by “old,” I mean…a total mess.
