Her foot slipped from his hand. She collapsed onto her belly, pulling her limbs out of his reach. Rock scraped Ryu's belly as he reached for her, but it was no use.
For a moment, their eyes met.
"I love you," Ryu said.
Jess pushed to her feet, breathing hard, her face flushed.
"Go to hell," she said.
Ryu collapsed into a heap. He heard her footsteps growing further away, and then dying out all together.
He would see her again; he consoled himself. There were many hiding places in the reeds where he could watch as she dove off the pier, laughing with her human friends, her human male replaced with another. Perhaps someday she would answer his siren song.
Until then, he would wait for her.
