She turned around and watched as Ryan Jones—the boy that was now dead—reach out and touch the mark. Two marks by Fear. Two people she could have saved. Instead, she reached into the pool of water and plucked out the memory of it happening. No one would know what happened to Melanie. From then on, she made sure she was the one that kept watch over her so that no other angel would notice what was happening to her.

It was horrible, she knew. The things Melanie went through—none of it should have happened. But Faye wasn’t a bad angel. She was just desperate for Melanie and Grim to meet, even if that meant they met before it was the right time.

So, she waited nine years before she finally sent the message to Grim. Melanie would be safe until her eighteenth birthday. Fear couldn’t take her to the Underworld until then. And obviously Faye didn’t want him meeting her when she was still a child, it would mess up the entire purpose!

But little did she know things would turn out so disastrous.

Melanie had awakened too soon, not even knowing exactly what she was, and as she was, her body wouldn’t last if she continued to use the power. And now that Melanie is known by the Underworld, it was too dangerous.

Grim hadn’t even figured out what she was. All that work to get the two of them together was a mistake. She knew that now. And the mistake was made all because she wanted to see the entity happier sooner. She had watched over Grim for a long time. She knew the lonely soul long before he merged with Killian. He didn’t know her—he had met her before but didn’t even know her name. When she heard of God’s plans for him, she had gone to tell him.

But the wait for Melanie to come into this world would be a long one. And after all the time spent—all the centuries waiting, Faye made the wrong choice.

Now all that was left to do was fix what could be. “I understand,” Faye replied to him.

He tilted his head at her—the heartbreak was there in his eyes as well, but he concealed it when he spoke again, “Everything must go back to the way it was—as much as it can be.” Faye turned back toward the seeing glass. Melanie and Grim had yet to come back to the human world.

She knew that she would be seeing them in time, though, but it wasn’t the way she had hoped. She wouldn’t be bringing the words they wanted to hear.
