  CHAPTER ONE

“We did it!” Tomas Bennett yelled as he bumped chests with his best friend, Adam Knight, in the locker room of Lykos Stadium. High from their International win, Adam spun Tomas around in his arms laughing with pure joy. Being the only American footballers, he and Tomas initially received lackluster receptions from their teammates and others in the European Lykos League. There had been all kinds of threats, brutal remarks, pranks and in your face discrimination which made Adam dig in harder to prove himself. He, Tomas and Jarcee, his personal security guard, lived outside the team’s compound in a house Alpha Barticus gave them and had little social interaction with the others.

Growing up with several siblings, lots of friends and relatives, the isolation had been a tough adjustment, and they’d thought of leaving the game altogether. That changed today when he and Tomas provided the winning scores.

“Good game,” Diego Klink, the team captain and the local Alpha’s son said, extending his fist to Adam. The room quieted as the team watched Adam’s most ardent adversary offer an olive branch. Both stood an inch or two over six feet, with muscular builds, and black hair. Diego’s dark eyes roved over Adam for a second before meeting his gaze again. In the past, Diego accused Adam of being a pretty boy and boasted of the scars on his arm and legs as if they were badges of honor. Adam recognized jealousy when he saw it and gave him a wide berth, refusing to do much of anything with the team socially if Diego was involved.

Most of his life Adam lived and breathed all kinds of sports. He simply loved to play and played most sports with ease. Highly competitive, Adam practiced for hours, watched videos, spent time in the gym, did everything possible to improve his abilities. Whereas Diego was a good player who didn’t see the need to spend half his days practicing and in Adam’s opinion it showed on the field. Being in a good mood, Adam bumped fists with him. “We did it man! We won the cup!”

Diego’s smile widened. “Yeah, we did!” Turning to the rest of the team he continued speaking in Italian. When he finished, they all cheered.

Adam listened to the pep talk with a smile. As many times as he’d told Diego the only thing he wanted was to play ball, the man still believed Adam wanted to be the team leader, Alpha. Tomas’ dark gaze met Adam’s. Adam shrugged and headed to his locker to shower, change and dress.

“What’s up for tonight?” Adam asked Tomas through their mental link. Although several years older than Adam, they never allowed their age differences to present a problem with their friendship.

“Bettina and a couple of the ladies offered to come to the house. Jarcee’s got the food and drinks ready.” Tomas wrapped a towel around his waist. “You down or you planning to hit the clubs with the team?”

Adam hadn’t thought much further than winning the game and now celebrating that win. Lately, their team-mates had been inviting them to parties and clubs to meet women and hang out. Most of the time they refused and opted to focus on game strategies, and independent practice with Jarcee at their place. Tonight was the culmination of months of hard work and Adam wasn’t sure how he felt or what he wanted to do as long as he released some energy. The ide
a of an “anything goes, anyway you want it fucking bonanza” appealed to his beast while celebrating with the team after all these months of avoiding them appealed to his human side. “Not sure yet.” He stripped and headed to the shower with Tomas following.

“One question,” a team member whose name he couldn’t recall asked Adam as he turned on the shower head. “How’d you kick the ball straight into the air, do a flip and then send it into the goal without breaking the velocity rule of 110 mph? That was pure magic.” He chuckled. “Never seen anyone do that before.”

Human soccer ball speeds top out at 75 mph, most being around 60. Wolves have extra strength. Therefore, Lykos League ball speeds easily doubled and required special reinforced balls, metal nets and reinforced goalie gear. Staying within 110 mph challenged players to remain focused and moderate the force of their kicks. It wasn’t easy and was the root of many losses in the league. He and Tomas practiced religiously to keep the velocity beneath 110 mph.

Unwilling to discuss his strategy with someone who never talked to him before today, Adam shrugged and stepped beneath the hot spray without answering. As the hot water pummeled his body, his thoughts tumbled over the game.

Competition for the Lykos Cup, the equivalent of the UEFA Champions League for humans, had been fierce. To win the coveted cup was the highest honor in the sport and they’d just done that. Coming into the season as underdogs they played hard, fought for every win and finally put egos aside to play as a well-oiled unit. It had been an extremely physically demanding season. Several players were carried off the field on stretchers. Their team lost two good members but in the end, they persevered.

  We won!

Those two words rolled through his mind repeatedly. He still couldn’t believe they’d accumulated enough points to win the cup. Finished, he turned off the water, grabbed his towel and headed toward his locker. Tomas stood a short distance away speaking to Diego and Frankie, another teammate.

Slightly taller than the other two, Tomas wasn’t as wide across the chest as Adam. Leaner, Tomas had more of a swimmer’s build. Damp mahogany hair glistened beneath the harsh overhead light; tendrils brushed against his shoulders and lay across a part of his angular face. The diamond stud and gold hoop earring in his ear flashed beneath his hair. Adam had called him a wannabe pirate when he first had his ear pierced. Tomas had laughed and later added the hoop.

“We’ve been invited to a party Alpha Klink’s throwing for the team.” Tomas didn’t turn to look at him when he spoke but continued listening to Frankie.

Adam sighed. Although he and Diego made peace for the benefit of the team, Adam didn’t like the guy. Diego’s sense of entitlement pissed Adam off. The guy treated the other players as his personal pack, snapping his fingers, giving orders and acting as if he was something other than one of the Alpha’s sons. It didn’t take long for Adam to make it clear he bowed to no Alpha other than his father, La Patron, and he’d kick ass and take names if that’s what was necessary to get his point across. Diego gave him hell from a distance after that.

To refuse an invitation from the host Alpha was an insult, something his father would frown upon unless Adam had a really good reason. And thinking the Alpha’s son was a punk bitch did not qualify.

“Sounds good. I’m in. But don’t cancel Bettina and the ladies until we see what this party has to offer. I need to empty my balls in the worst way tonight.”

“Same here,” Tomas said looking over his shoulder at Adam.

Adam glanced at Diego, their gazes held a moment before Diego nodded, clapped Frankie on the shoulder and walked off. Tomas headed to his locker, finished dressing and sat on the bench to wait for Adam.

“What?” Adam asked after a few moments.

He and Tomas’ friendship grew closer when Tomas dated Renee, Adam’s sister and litter-mate. Although both Tomas and Renee cared deeply for each other they both agreed they wanted mated matches. Once Tomas and Renee realized they weren’t mates they broke up. It had been difficult for a short while to be in Renee and Tomas’ presence because it was obvious they still cared deeply for each other. Eventually, Tomas left to stay with his father’s family in Ohio while waiting to fly oversees and that helped. When the time came to leave for Europe to play on the team, Tomas seemed much better.

“Nothing. I just hate we need to be politically correct and put up with this bullshit. They think Americans are full of shit and stupid. I’m sure it was Diego’s idea to have his father throw the party so we’ll all be in the same place when the MVP of the game is announced. He’s so damn cocksure he’s going to win it again this year and just wants to rub it into the Americans’ faces.” Tomas combed his fingers through his dark hair, pulling long strands behind his ear, and leaned against the lockers. His green eyes flitted away from Adam’s gaze.

“They always pull this BS. Why are you tripping?” Adam pulled on his green short sleeved shirt and looked at Tomas. “Something else happened?”

Tomas shook his head slowly and then stopped. “I think my mate is nearby.” He held up his hand. “I don’t like it. I don’t like guys. You know that.”

Adam’s heart slammed against his chest. He, David and Tomas had discussed the possibility of having male mates like Davian and Matt, Tomas’ adopted parents. As much as they all liked Tomas’ fathers they loved women a hell of a lot more, especially Adam and Tomas, who had different women in their beds every week.

“Yeah, I know,” Adam said slowly without releasing Tomas’ gaze. Reading the defeat and bleakness in his friend’s eyes choked the sympathetic words from his throat. Growing up, they’d been taught mates were gifts to be treasured. Race, nationality, and gender were not important. The sharing of souls and hearts were the Goddess’ domain and she never made mistakes. Adam’s Aunt Renee was mated to Mélange, a beautiful Asian warrior and he loved them both.

“Wait. Not Diego?” Adam hoped Tomas wouldn't be shackled with that overblown buffoon.

“Fuck no,” Tomas said frowning. “A relative of his, I think. I’ve sensed something before, during practice and at games but never really got a good look.” Resting his arms on his thighs, he hung his head. “I think that’s one of the reasons they want us there tonight.”

“Other than rubbing my face in him winning the MVP award?” Adam said while wondering if there was a way to politely decline after accepting the invitation.

“Yeah. That’s my take on it.”

Adam checked his appearance in the mirror. He rolled up his sleeves and didn’t bother buttoning his shirt all the way, the cool air felt good on his chest. He ran his hand through his jet black wavy hair to keep it from falling in his eyes then stuffed his things in his backpack, lifted it and stepped aside so Tomas could stand. “No matter what, I’ve got your back. We all have your back, you know that right?”

Tomas smiled although it didn’t reach his eyes, Adam knew his friend would handle whatever came at him with dignity and strength. “Yeah, I know. Let’s do this.”

Adam put on his aeronautical sunglasses and pushed them up his nose. They strode out the locker room and was surprised by the number of fans screaming their names, waving papers and programs for them to sign. They’d done this before, but on a much smaller scale. Initially, he’d been flattered. Today he ached in places he never realized existed and wanted to get through the celebration as quickly as possible so he could sink into whichever woman would warm his bed.

Being an Alpha’s son, Adam morphed into his public persona, smiling, winking and signing everything placed beneath his face. He and Tomas took pictures with fans, held babies and accepted a pocketful of phone numbers written on pieces of paper. He couldn’t honestly say he disliked this part of sports.

Jarcee stood near the exit watching and waiting for them to finish. After an hour, the crowd hadn’t diminished as much as Adam preferred so he glanced at Jarcee. “Come get us. I’m tired.”

The seven feet, blonde giant had been with Adam since he was born, and took h
is job as head security for La Patron’s son just as seriously now as he had when Adam had been in diapers. Jarcee moved through the crowd with ease creating a path for Adam and Tomas to exit. A few brave souls reached out to touch the two American Ballers but with a look from Jarcee retracted their limbs voluntarily.

The sun had set and the air cooled as they strode to the customized SUV, a high-class security vehicle with bulletproof windows, specialized metal and all kinds of automatic weaponry. It had been a gift from Alpha Barticus after Adam’s first game.

“Have you decided to attend Alpha Klink’s affair?” Jarcee asked as the driver pulled out the parking lot.

“Yes,” Adam said after a brief silence. “It’s best to pay our respect. We don’t have to stay long.” He glanced at Tomas. If his friend met his mate tonight, Adam would be returning home alone. That was a given.

After clearing gate security, they arrived at the front of Alpha Klink’s home. Several parked cars littered the driveway blocking them from reaching the columned portico. Adam, Tomas and Jarcee exited the SUV and headed for the entrance. Loud music drifted from the opened windows and doors.

“The party’s started,” Adam said looking at Tomas.

  “Good, I’m hungry,” Tomas said.

“You’re always hungry,” Jarcee teased through their links. Just as they reached the double doors, he continued. “Be careful. Watch what you eat and where you go. I’d like to keep both of you in my line of sight. Especially you Tomas. I don’t like the way the Alpha’s been looking at you. I would hate to tear this house down and start an international war, so be careful.”

Adam looked up at Jarcee and read the seriousness of his gaze. “You expect trouble?”

“I always expect trouble so I’m always ready,” Jarcee said as his gaze flicked from Adam to Tomas.
