After a long silence seated on the grass between his son and his daughter, Dad gave a brief, harsh grunt, as if he had finally discovered the consolation he had been seeking in the recesses of his being. I thought then that he would have liked at that very moment to be absorbed by the earth, swallowed gently into the depths, in order, at last, to merge with the relics of all the men and women who had been nourished by these once fertile lands.
