“I’ve been expecting your call,” Starfinder said. “We are ready to proceed.”
Twenty minutes later the Commander stood in front of his assembled men. They were all dressed in spacesuits, with only their faceplates open. He didn’t make a speech, just told them that this was an emergency and it was time to take evasive action.
They took the elevator platform to travel down to the floor of the docking bay. While going down, Beringer looked at the big battle cruiser. As menacing as it appeared, it was useless against what they were facing. They climbed the stairs down to the fifth level of the station, where Starfinder and two of his people met them.
“Tell your men to follow the technicians,” the alien said to Beringer. “The chambers have been prepared for them.”
“Have you found a way to…?” he didn’t finish the sentence.
Starfinder nodded. “Yes, we have.”
“What will you do if one of them is affected?” Beringer asked.
“We’ll deal with it.” Starfinder smiled grimly. “All of them will have to be scanned, including you, my friend.”
Chapter Thirty-eight
Captain’s Log
Things have changed. The station has shut down again. We are only in control of the tower that we first occupied. The Genaar have taken refuge in the bowels of the station. They’ve created an energy barrier that locks us out. We can’t force our way in.
Lucky for us, we had some shuttles on Nu-Eden, because they also closed the docking bay. Our only access to the tower is through the pressure chamber on the 21st floor. Commander Beringer and his marines have joined the Genaar. Too bad.
All the humans in the tower have been changed. The giant water lily, which is home to the Xandra on the station, covers most of the pond in the small park. One hundred ninety-seven human bodies can supply a lot of building material.
The thousand settlers who are still in suspension will soon be revived and shipped down to Nu-Eden. They will be split into two groups and will settle in different parts of the continent. They will not be processed. The Xandra has decided to let them live as real humans. It is an experiment. If they become a problem, then they can always be absorbed and changed at a later date.
The Xandra has made me a gift. She gave me back my wife. She created her from my own sub-conscious memories. I know it is not really her, but it has been so long since I’ve seen her last, I will probably never know the difference. She had always been a beautiful woman, but now she is gorgeous. Her breasts are large and full, without the slightest bit of sag; her buttocks are firm and round, her skin as soft as velvet. When we make love the universe moves, and she is totally devoted to me. What more can a man ask for?
I am happy.
We are the children of the Xandra.
WE ARE THE XANDRA.
