  After several twists and turns, he arrived at the cathedral. A single spire topped its tower on the northern side, making it one of the tallest churches in the world. The plaza outside was silent and still. As the old man approached the central door in the stupendous Gothic facade, a crowned Madonna smiled down at him, holding the Christ Child in her arms. The Virgin’s peaceful expression reminded the grieving husband of his beloved Yvette.

  “Believe this too shall pass,” she had said.

  I do believe it, Lord! I believe you will do a great work. I believe the Word of Dieu cannot die. Almighty Dieu, accept my final act of faith—and may you somehow use this treasure for your great purposes.

  Stretching out his withered hand, Jacques Dalsace opened the door and carried the words of life into Strasbourg Cathedral.
