She groaned, tipped back her head, and stared at the knotted beams of the ceiling. Ugh, he was with her, even in her art world. That recognition took the joy of the process right out of her.
As she cleaned up, she checked the time. 6:10 p.m.. She guessed she should go fetch her SUV, grab a bite, and head to bed. What an exciting life.
The knock on the door caught her off guard, and she jumped. Something about the sound didn’t seem right, maybe it was that it had a hesitant chuck-thump to it. Or was it scratchy? She couldn’t decide. Darn, she was off this evening.
“Who is it?” she called, approaching the entrance. Jared? She wished. With one hand gripping the handle, she swung open the door.
And an irrepressible scream tore from her throat.
