“Colleen walloped that one,” said Quayle pointing at the one labelled ‘The Scribe’. “They were backroom boys really, probably not been out on a job since the 90s,” said Carding.

“Hence their choice of footwear, it all made sense., They’d parked their car nearby and just had a quick amble up to the ambush point. Black, well shined brogues. Not really made for tromping the canal,” said Quayle.

“Either way, you and Colleen did a job on them. There’ll be an inquest, a death by misadventure verdict and a pauper’s grave for the pair of them. Are you back on duty tomorrow?” asked Carding

Quayle smirked “Yes, my first diary car,” he said. “

Well there’s nothing like a spot of normality,” said Carding.

“Talking of which I’m off down the allotment, it’s been a couple of weeks,” said Quayle, getting up and leaving. Without a car he walked to the allotments.

As he walked up the path things looked much better than when he had left. A smell of cigarette smoke caught his nostrils and he turned. It was Palfreyman. “Been to the hardware shop, roof’s sprung a leak”

They hugged. “Good to see the place spick and span,” said Quayle as Palfreyman made coffee.

“I have something for you,” said Quayle putting the folder on the table. Palfreyman handed Quayle his coffee then picked up the folder.

“Gold, very nice, very disposable,” he said smiling. Carefully he opened the envelope. It contained a Post Office Account Book “Phew, it looks like Uncle Martin has finally made amends.” he said.

  Both men laughed.
