The church bells had stopped and in the quietness she heard a different and familiar sound. She opened her eyes quickly and turned round, shielding them with her hand as she searched the skies.
A lone fighter was flying towards her, its small dark shape skimming low across the blue. The shape grew bigger and the throaty growl of its engine louder until, with a mighty roar, the Hurricane swept over her head and went into a triumphant victory roll. Winnie stood on the bottom rung of the gate and waved as it flew off into the distance and became a faint black speck. For some reason she found that she was crying.

About the Author
Margaret Mayhew was born in London and her earliest childhood memories were of the London blitz. She began writing in her mid-thirties and had her first novel published in 1976. She is married to American aviation author Philip Kaplan, and lives on the borders of Wales. Her novels, The Crew, The Little Ship and Our Yanks, are also published by Corgi.
