He sighed and looked at the door, then back at me. “It's complicated,” he said.
“I'm not going anywhere until you tell me,” I said. I wasn't completely sure I could walk yet, anyway.
“Technically they're demons,” he said. “But yes, they are also vampires. Vampires aren't exactly like what Hollywood has made them out to be. They're demons who feed off the blood of witches so that they can cast magic in the human world.”
I was starting to rethink my desire to know the truth. Demon vampires? This couldn't be happening. Maybe I was caught in some kind of terrible nightmare.
“Wait, if they feed off of witches, what did they want with me?”
I had the strange feeling that asking these questions would lead me down a path I wasn’t ready to walk.
“Come on,” he said, shaking his head. “Let’s get you inside. We can discuss those things another time.”
Another time? I'd had just about enough of this place, thank you very much. I walked past him and back into the neon glow of Venom.
I wanted to do what I should have done half an hour ago. Grab Katy and get the hell out of there.
But when I started toward the dance floor, Rend called out to me. “Hey Franki.”
“What?” I said, turning back to him. I didn't remember ever telling him my name.
He motioned for me to follow him, then leaned over the top of the bar and grabbed a black t-shirt. He threw it at me and I nearly dropped my shoes to catch it.
I held it out to get a better look at the shirt. The word VENOM was written in bright green across the chest. On the back was the word STAFF.
I swallowed. “What’s this for?”
He raised an eyebrow.
“You’re one of mine, now,” he said, a smile playing at his lips. “You start tomorrow.”

It has been so great to be writing new content and new characters in the same world as my Peachville High Demons series. Learning about this world through Franki’s fresh eyes has been incredibly fun, and I can’t wait to write more. Being back in the Shadow Demons world reminded me all over again just how much I love to write and create. I can’t wait to start working on Emerald Darkness, the first book in my new Demons series, featuring characters you know and love like Harper and Lea.
