“Did you mean what you said?” I asked, trembling with the cold. He responded by holding me tighter and leading me to his horse.
“Yes, my love,” he said quietly. “I love you; there is no doubt. I just hope I will not be the ruin of your happiness, madam.”
He stopped and took me in his arms once more, reaching for my lips.
“You have all of me, madam, and all of my heart if you wish it. I will no longer be afraid to love. By my own obstinacy I endangered your life. You would not have run from me had I the courage to admit my feelings and realise I was protecting you from the wrong danger. I will never deny you my love again. Will you still have me as a husband, madam?” he said with a smile.
I reached up to wrap my damp arms around his neck to kiss him.
“Yes, yes I will.”
With a laugh of triumph, Lord Drake scooped me up and sat me on top of his horse. It was then I saw my captor groaning, with a shot to the shoulder being attended to by a constable and one the men Lord Drake had engaged to help him track down the Viscount and his cortege. The Viscount and all of his men were rounded up and brought to justice.
When bathed and safe, I did receive a sound spanking from my husband-to-be for running away and endangering my life. This time I was asked to come to his study and obediently lie myself over his knee. My gown was lifted and I took the strikes of his firm hand with dignity, albeit a few tears. My fortitude in taking my punishment was rewarded with an afternoon spent in bed beneath Lord Drake as he reclaimed my body for his own in a robust fashion. Two weeks later, I became Lady Drake and found it in my heart and yearning to obey as my wedding vows dictated as much as I could. But there were to be moments when my stubborn nature overtook my reason and Lord Drake was given good grounds to school me lovingly over his knee.
