When we step out of the elevator, Brad leads me over to the attached chapel where my dad is waiting outside the doors. Brad hands me off to my dad, then he holds out his elbow to my mom. “Shall we?” he asks her.
She kisses my dad quickly and takes the arm Brad’s offering her. “Let’s do it.” They walk in ahead of us, leaving Dad and me alone.
He holds out his elbow just like Brad, and I slip my hand into it. “Are you sure about this?” he asks.
I nod, no longer feeling nervous. “I’ve never been more sure in my life, Dad.”
“Okay, let’s do it then.” He nods at two men dressed in suits, and they open the big, white double doors for us, letting the music filter out to fill my ears.
When I look up, I see Holden standing at the end of the aisle, watching me with a big smile on his cleanshaven face. It brings on my own smile. I’ve always loved his beard, but I love seeing his strong cheek and jaw bones. I love the dimple in his chin that sits just below his perfectly, full lips — lips that have brought me so much pleasure. Just thinking about that mouth of his brings on goosebumps.
My mom and Brad are both standing on my side and Jack is standing next to Holden. When we get to the end of the aisle, the preacher asks, “Who gives this woman to be wed?”
“Her mother and I do,” my dad says. He kisses my cheek and hands me off to Holden before taking his place next to Jack.
Holden turns and looks at me with his blue-green eyes shining brightly. “You’re beautiful,” he whispers.
I smile. “Thank you,” I whisper back.
“Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today to join Holden Michael Brantford and Hope Louise Daniels in holy matrimony. If any person can show just cause why they should not be joined together in matrimony — let him speak now or forever hold his peace,” the preacher says.
Holden and I look at one another. My heart starts to pound in my chest. The corners of his lips turn up just a bit, like he’s nervous my dad will change his mind and speak his piece, but my dad stays silent.
“Very well,” the preacher says just as the doors behind us fly open.
“Wait!”
To be continued….
