  2011

Directs Warner Bros. thriller Contagion. Announces he will retire from feature filmmaking. In the fall, Soderbergh begins production on the male stripper drama Magic Mike, which he financed, along with actor Channing Tatum, without a studio on board. Begins planning his next and last film for Warner Bros., an adaptation of the TV property The Man from U.N.C.L.E., but the project is stalled after George Clooney bows out. In June, Magic Mike opens in theaters, earning far better ticket sales than expected ($39 million). The development of a Broadway musical adaptation of the hit film is also announced. Later that summer, directs the HBO movie Behind the Candelabra, a love story about Liberace and his younger live-in lover.

  2013

In May, Behind the Candelabra is watched by 2.4 million viewers during its premiere HBO broadcast, more than any other HBO original movie.
