“He made it my business when he decided to fall asleep on my doormat!”

Charlie and the girl fell silent again. They looked at each other. She was still wrapped in a bath robe. Charlie shrugged his shoulders.

  “What’s your name?” he said.

“I can’t believe you! Your brother rolls up on my doorstep, you shout in my face and now you want to come on to me?”

Charlie stroked his chin. “I know you from somewhere. What’s your name?”

“Will you just get your brother?”

  “What’s your name?”

She threw her hands in the air. “Crystal. My name is Crystal.”

  “Crystal, you’re a peach.”

She turned, stalked into the bedroom, and slammed the door. A moment later, she opened it and poked her head out.

“I’m in here calling the cops, you know.”

She pushed the glasses up her nose. “You’re still here? I told you I was – ”

Charlie grabbed the hood on Marcus’ sweatshirt and dragged him toward the stairs.

Crystal slammed the door behind her, locked it tight, and pushed past the two men. Charlie trotted down the stairwell afterwards, and Marcus sauntered down the hall behind him.

Crystal hurried to get away, and almost walked into the short perfectly uniformed man standing on the side walk, with his Chauffeur’s Cap perched on a head that look slightly too big for his body. He stood aside to let her pass, and she scooted by wondering what in the world he was doing standing on the sidewalk outside her building in the first place.
