William glanced over at Molly and an image of her riding him flashed through his mind, catching him off guard. It wasn’t that it was unwelcome, not wholly any way. It just surprised him.

Just thinking about having Molly climb on top of him, her pussy wrapped around him, made his cock hard. His jeans were a bit too tight and he shifted in his seat, anxious to lie out on the bed of his truck with her beside him, under him, on top of him. It made no difference. Usually he wasn’t this at ease with entertaining the notion of having sex with a stranger. Because even though he knew Molly’s name and what she did, she really was a stranger.

He’d built walls for a reason, and keeping women at bay when he was climbing the charts had always been a challenge, especially given his bad boy image, but he did it. Except right now he wanted Molly something fierce and all the rules he’d made to protect himself meant nothing. It was a primal need to have her.

“Uncomfortable?” She asked, catching him adjusting himself as they turned off the main trail onto the smaller trail which led to the slough.

  “Nope, not in the least.”

A bloom of rose flushing her cheeks. Did she know how hard he was for her? How he wanted to bend her over the hood of his truck and mount her from behind like a stallion? A low growl escaped his lips; he couldn’t help himself. It was a way to relieve the pressure building inside him. He wanted her. Badly.

Molly didn’t react to his growl and he hoped she didn’t hear him. He didn’t want to scare her away. Perhaps she’d agreed to go down to the slough to actually relax and listen to the frogs. William sincerely hoped not.

Though it would be for the best.

The road dipped and the air was thick and dry in the hollow. The sun was finally setting and a bright full moon began to rise, illuminating the boughs of the willow trees sighing in the faint breeze. The wind whispered through the leaves and the eerie glow of fireflies flickered down by the water’s edge. It made the place seem magical.

The slough was brimming with sparkling water instead of being the dried out backwater it became later on in the summer. That water wasn’t fit for man nor beast.

William stopped and parked his truck down by the shore.

“It hasn’t changed much since I was a kid.”

“Not much has around these parts.” She sighed. “Then again I’m sure you’re used to change, being from the big city.”

  “Don’t hold that against me.”

“I won’t.” A smile quirked on her lips.

  He snickered. “Right.”

A strange expression flashed across her face. She opened her door and jumped out.

  “What’re you doing, Molly?”

“Want to go for a swim?” She asked and, before he could answer, she started undoing her jeans, slipping them down over her hips. In the headlights he could see her panties were pink and a shot of arousal went straight to his groin.

  Don’t do it.

Only the temptation was too much.

  “Hell yeah.”

William swung open his door and started to peel off his own clothes, as Molly disappeared into the long grass.

“Watch for snakes, darlin’,” he teased to flush her out of her hiding spot.

  “Shut up!” She hollered back.

He craned his neck, trying to catch a glimpse of her, but he couldn’t see anything, just a pile of her rumpled clothes on the shore and her silhouette as she scampered into the water. The splash and her subsequent shrieks sent a tingle down his spine.

  Fuck. It sounds cold.

“Are you coming in, William?” She shouted.

He chuckled and toed out of his boots before undoing and pulling his jeans down over his hips, chucking them on the ground next to his shirt and boots. It was times like this he was glad he didn’t wear briefs. He hung his hat on the truck’s antenna and padded over the gravel to the water. Molly was in the middle of the slough, treading water in a pool of moonlight.

“Come on in you big baby! The water’s fine.”

“I’m sure it is.” He sucked in a deep breath as the cold nipped at his prickly hot skin. He bit his lip and sank under the surface, sputtering when he surfaced a moment later. “Fuck! That’s ball–shrinking cold!”

Molly laughed. “Ball shrinking huh? That’s not something you want to admit to a lady.”

Darlin, it won’t be long before they warm up again with you so close, this water is heating up mighty fast.

Only he didn’t say that. “I thought you weren’t a lady.”

“Maybe I’m not,” she teased, splashing him.

She swam over to him and he pulled her in close, and she wrapped her arms around his neck. Her nipples brushed against his chest and a moan escaped past his lips.

  “Molly, I can’t…I can’t promise you anything.”

“Who said anything about promises?” She wrapped her legs around his waist, as he gained his footing on the sandy bottom, the tip of his cock rubbing her pussy. She gasped, but didn’t move away.

“What’re we doing?” He asked, though he knew.

“Living for the day. I usually don’t, you see, and…” She trailed off and then leaned forward, pressing her lips against his. The moment they touched he lost all sense of reason.

“I want you,” Molly whispered against his neck.

“I want you too.” And he took her mouth again, tasting her honeyed lips, pulling her tight against him. “Do you know how damn good it feels to have your legs wrapped around me?” He asked, pressing a kiss to her throat.

  Molly wiggled closer. “Tell me.”

He moaned. “You drive me wild, darlin’.”

She leaned in and he captured her lips, pushing past to twine his tongue with hers. He let his hands drift up her back, sliding over her slick skin to tangle in her hair. Molly tasted sweet, like the last of summer wine.

“I want you,” she murmured again against his ear, as he trailed his tongue down her neck to her collar bone, nipping her skin, her pulse racing under his lips. He didn’t say anything but slid his hands under her butt to hold her, then hoisted her up and carried her out of the water.

“Watch out for that water snake,” she teased.

He scurried out of the water. “You’re going to pay for that!”

Molly kissed him and nipped his lip. “Make me pay.”

William moaned and set her on the bed of his truck. He reached over and grabbed a blanket out of the open back window and she moved to spread it out in the back.

“No darlin’ don’t lay it there. The way I’m feeling I may rock the truck so hard the emergency brakes will give way.”

  “Promises, promises.”

William growled and snatched the blanket from her, spreading it out on top of the sweet smelling grass.

  “Git down here.”

“And if I don’t?” A smile quirked on her lips, challenging him as she stayed where she was, kneeling in the bed of his pickup truck. The moonlight caught on the droplets of water still clinging to her skin. It made her skin sparkle, her nipples puckering in the breeze, her hair loose over her shoulders. William’s gaze traveled over her, devouring the sight of her. She was sumptuous, like a feast to a starving man.

He moved toward her. “You asked for it, darlin’.”

She arched a brow. “Is that so?”

He answered her question with an urgent kiss, pushing his tongue past her lips to claim her mouth, as his hands slid under her bottom, lifting her up so she could wrap her legs around him again. Forget the blanket, he was going to act out that image in his head of her bent over his hood.

William carried her to the front of the truck and set her down. “Hold on to the hood.”

Molly complied, leaning over, her ass pressed against his groin.

“Don’t move.” He reluctantly left her there and reached in through the open window into the glove box and pulled out a condom. He opened the package quickly and rolled it down.

“Do you want me?” he asked.
<
br />   “So bad.” Her voice caught in her throat.

That was all he needed to hear. William gripped her hips and nudged her legs open, his cock poised at her hot entrance.

He was so ready, but he was hungry for more.

“Nah, this isn’t going to work.”

“What?” She asked, her voice hitching.

  “Turn around.”

Molly did and he scooped her up, setting her on his hood.

  “Spread them,” he ordered.

  “Pardon?”

  “You heard me.”

She spread her legs and he grinned, placing a kiss on her soft mound. Then he trailed his tongue down between her thigh and labia, letting know exactly what he was going to do to her. Molly let out a little gasp.

“Patience, darlin’ I’m just getting started.” They had all night and he planned to take advantage of their time together until the sun came up. He pressed his face against her legs, breathing in her scent, and it made his blood flame with desire. It took all of his strength not to thrust his cock into her, but he wanted her to remember this time. This one stolen moment.

He dragged his tongue up her slit, tasting her.

“Oh God,” she moaned, her fingers tangling in his hair.

William parted her folds, twirling the tip of his tongue around her clit, teasing it, and from her pants he could tell it was working. She began to grind her hips, moving in time with his mouth.

  “Please,” she begged.

“What do you want?” He slipped a finger into her wet heat. She was ready for him. Molly moaned and cupped her breast, which made his cock twitch. He slipped in another finger, stretching her as he finger–fucked her. She was so damn hot and he wanted to replace his finger with his cock.

“What do you want?” He asked again. What he wanted was for her to beg for his cock.

  “You.”

William bit back a groan and picked her up. The hood was too high for him to fuck her across it. Instead he carried her to the blanket in the grass and laid her down. She spread her legs and he pressed his cock against her slick entrance before sliding inside her. She cried out, her nails biting into his shoulder blades as he buried himself to the hilt.

“Fuck,” he cursed. Molly was so snug, so tight around him. Not being able to hold back, he began to thrust, savoring the sensation of pistoning in and out of her.

As he leaned over her, her teeth grazed his neck, her nails digging into his flesh once more as her legs hooked around his waist, her heels kneading his ass, holding him tight against her as he rode her.

His pace quickened as he felt her coming around him. A tingle, followed by pressure built up in his lower back, his balls tightening. He was close, so damn close.

Molly gasped, her body taut as she came. That was all he needed to finally let go, every nerve ending in his body on fire as he came. He dropped his head onto her shoulder, her skin dewy, her brown hair curling on her shoulders as he laid kisses against her throat. He drank in her scent as she clung to him.

William realized he’d made a mistake. A big mistake. His plan was to keep people out, to fade into the background, but after tonight it seemed Molly was breaking down his walls. And that scared him. He couldn’t let her in further.

  This had to stop.

  Chapter Four

  “Earth to Molly.”

“Huh?” Molly glanced up to see Dr. Shaw standing in front of her, waving a hand in front of her face.

Ronnie was grinning. “You’ve been brushing that sedated dog’s teeth for about five minutes. Usually you do the dental check in a minute flat.”

  “Sorry, my mind was elsewhere.”

  Damn straight it was.

She couldn’t get William out of her head and she could still feel his hands on her, on her hips as she rode him, his lips on her neck, his cock stretching her. Her cheeks heated and she cleared her throat.

“Teeth look great.” She moved to the side to let Ronnie finish his work.

“You look tired,” he said. “Did you stay up late?”

“No.” Oh yes. William had kept her up all night and she didn’t mind in the least. Once the sun rose, they got dressed and he drove her home. All she had time for was a quick shower and a coffee with a double shot of espresso. Thank God her mother was in Edmonton visiting her sister and the new grandbaby.

Another point of contention her mother often reminded her about.

  “You’re not getting any younger!”

“Huh,” Ronnie remarked, obviously not believing her. “It’s a shame really.”

  “What do you mean?”

“You never get out. Your whole life revolves around the animals.”

Oh god. Had he been talking to her mother?

She cocked any eyebrow. “Are you complaining about my good work ethic, Dr. Shaw?”

He chuckled as he drew blood from their canine patient. “No, no. It’s just…I don’t have much of a life outside this clinic either. I respect what you do but…”

“What’re you talking about?” She asked as she took the vial of blood from him.

  “Dating.”

  He had. Damn her mother.

Molly snorted. “Have you been talking to my mother on the off chance?”

“No.” He sighed. “You want to go out some time?”

Molly’s mouth almost dropped open. “Uh, what?”

Ronnie shrugged. “As coworkers, if that’s what you’re comfortable with.”

  “Okay. Sure.”

“Good. How about we grab a drink after work?”

“Sure.” Molly was still stunned. Was this how a deer felt when a semi was headed for it?

“Good.” Ronnie cleared his throat. “Better get on with the procedure. I don’t want this guy under for too long.”

“Right, I’ll run the blood work.” Molly collected up the vials and left the operating room. As she went about testing the dog’s blood a gnawing sense of guilt came over her. Suddenly it felt like she was cheating on William.

  Only she wasn’t.

What happened between William and her had been intense and incredible, but it had only been one night.

  That was it.

  One. Night.

She barely knew William, and Ronnie, well she’d known him a long time. Besides, Ronnie had reiterated that they were going out as friends. Nothing more than that. Only Molly had the feeling there was something more. Ronnie’s intentions were foggy, but she had a pretty good idea about where he wanted to go.

  It wasn’t necessarily bad.

  Give it a shot.

  Her mother would be thrilled.

Only Molly couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling that settled in her.

  Shake it off.

That’s what she had to do. She was a free agent.

Molly finished up the testing and then assisted Ronnie with the procedure and the next one and the next.

Ronnie acted like nothing had changed between them in their professional dynamic. He may be oblivious but she wasn’t. Of course it could just be her, just reading too much into something again.

Getting ready to run, which she’d done many a time before.

When quitting time came, Molly was as jittery as a jack rabbit. One loud noise and she might bolt.

What am I so afraid of?

And that was the crux of all her issues.

Of why she wouldn’t leave her safety net, why she just remained stuck in limbo, rather than moving on like so many people had done before her.

“You ready to go?” Ronnie asked.

“Yep.” Molly took a deep breath and they walked in silence to the watering hole just a few doors down from the vet clinic.

Ronnie opened the door, holding it for her. “After you.”

“Thanks.” Molly tried to control the blush which was threatening to bloom in her cheeks. Ronnie was polite and kind, but it was awkward.

You’re reading too much into this.

She followed him to a booth, she slid in and
Ronnie tossed his jacket on the seat. “I’ll get the drinks. What will you have?”

  “Beer is fine.”

Ronnie raised his eyebrows in surprise. “Really?”

  “What?” Molly asked, laughing.

“I never pegged you for a long neck type of girl.”

“Really?” Molly snorted. “I find that hard to believe. I’m country as far as they come, buddy.”

“Right.” Ronnie nodded. “Well, I’ll go get you a beer.”

Molly groaned inwardly as he headed to the bar. This wasn’t going very well. She should just get up and run. She slid to the end of the booth and was about to get up to leave, when she caught sight of that familiar cowboy hat. One that had been hanging off a certain Dually’s antenna down by the slough.

William was standing across the room at the pool table, bent over and taking a shot. He was wearing a white vee neck t–shirt, tight blue jeans and his boots, and knowing what was under those clothes got her all hot under the collar.

As if knowing he had an audience he straightened and tipped his hat back, those brilliant eyes boring into her.

Before she knew what was happening she was moving across the bar toward him. She was a moth to his flame.

  Damn him.

He leaned against his cue stick. “I didn’t expect to see you.”

“I could say the same for you,” she said, hooking her thumbs in the belt loops of her jeans just to stop herself from reaching out and touching him.

  “How’s that?”

“Well, you want to keep a low profile, yet you’re out here in a bar?” She leaned forward.

William chuckled. “If I lived like a hermit people would find that weirder and start digging.”

“Digging for what? Do you have a secret?”

“Nope, but I like my personal life private.

  She nodded. “You’re right.”

  He grinned. “I’m always right.”

Heat spread through her at his suggestive tone. “Well, it’s good to see you again.”

“Where are you off to in such a rush?” He asked.

“I’m here with someone.” It was hard for her to say.
