  I would never understand why my dharma was chasing down murderers, but in that instant, I stopped questioning it. If solving crime led to moments like this, it was worth it.

  Nicole glanced up from the dog’s fur. “Kate, do you remember what you told me during our last yoga class?”

  To be honest, I didn’t. I shook my head no.

  “You said that if my future felt dark, I needed to lighten it. When I asked how, you said I had to find hope.”

  I smiled. “I remember now.”

  “You were right.” She gently kissed the top of the lab’s head. “That’s what I’m naming her. Hope.”
