“Thank you, Natalie,” Roberta said, and then turned to Alexandra’s family. “Natalie, this is Rose and Fernando Angelo.”
Natalie held out her hand. “I’m very happy to meet you. I’m very fond of your daughter.”
“Alex has talked about you too. She speaks very highly of you,” Rose admitted.
Roberta put a plate of food in front of Rachel. “Eat something, honey.”
“I’m not hungry, Mom.”
“You have to keep your strength up, Rachel.” Rose took a seat beside her. “Natalie, let me get you a plate too.” Rose was already out of her seat making a plate of food.
“I’ll go home with your father and I’ll leave my car for you,” Roberta said sitting next to Rachel. “I know you’ll be anxious to get to the hospital in the morning.” Roberta looked at the Angelo’s. “After I examine Alex, I’ll come pick you both up and take you to the hospital.”
“Thank you, but we can take a cab,” Fernando said, and Rose nodded.
“Don’t be silly. Are you working tomorrow?” Roberta asked Rachel.
Rachel nodded as she finished her plate of food. “I’ll try to get done early so I can get back to the hospital.”
“Rachel, Rose and Fernando will be with Alexandra all day.”
“I know,” Rachel said, looking down.
“You just can’t stay away?” Roberta chuckled. “I understand.” The doorbell rang and Roberta went to the door. “Come on in, honey. Are you hungry?”
“No. I ate at the hospital.” Richard walked into the dining area. “Hello, everyone.” Steven looked at Rachel. “I looked in on Alex before I left. She was resting comfortably.”
“Thanks, Dad.”
“Are you ready to go, Roberta?”
She nodded and picked up her coat. “Rachel, get some sleep. Please.”
“I will. Thanks for everything.”
“I’m here if you need me, honey,” Roberta said smiling as she kissed Rachel’s cheek.
Rachel raised an eyebrow. She believed her mother’s words. For the first time in her life, she felt her mother really cared. Cared about her and Alex.
*
Roberta was in the hospital early because Steven had a scheduled surgery. She walked over to the ICU to check on her patient.
“How are you feeling this morning?” Roberta asked wearing a smile.
“Anxious to get out of here.” Alex answered.
“Alex, you just had surgery for a very serious injury. Patience, dear.”
“I know, but I miss Rachel.”
“I know you do.” Roberta read Alexandra’s chart and listened to her heart. She also examined the wound.
“How big a scar am I going to have?”
Roberta smirked. “I’m a professional. Did you think I’d leave you with an ugly scar?”
Alex shrugged.
“Right now it looks bad, but it will fade in time and you’ll barely notice it.” Roberta looked at Alex. “Are you worried that Rachel might think you’re ugly now?”
Again Alex shrugged.
“If you had seen my daughter the day of the accident, you wouldn’t be worried.” Roberta sat in the chair next to the bed. “Do you know she stormed into the operating room to check on your condition?” Alex shook her head. “I told her I couldn’t save you and talk to her.” Roberta chuckled. “Before she left the OR, she told me to save you because she needed you.”
The tears formed in Alex’s eyes. “Thank you for saving my life. I know you and I haven’t gotten along, but you have to know how much I love Rachel.”
“I know you do. I saw the way you fought to stay alive. Someone else might have died in that car accident.” Roberta grinned. “You saved my daughter’s life by staying alive. I don’t think she would have made it if something happened to you.”
“I feel the same way if something happened to her.”
“The first thing I want you to do when you get home is destroy that pre-nuptial agreement.”
“It doesn’t matter, Roberta. I don’t want your daughter’s money.”
“I know you don’t and that’s why I want that ridiculous thing destroyed.” Roberta stood up and touched Alex’s hand. “We also have a wedding to plan.”
CHAPTER THIRTY ONE
Alex continued her recovery at home over the next few months. She was even
working in the office several hours a day now. Rachel hovered over Alex,
making sure she wasn’t straining herself.
“Honey, I feel fine. I need to work. I’m bored sitting around the house.” Alex touched Rachel’s face. “Your mother said I could go back to work. Isn’t that good enough for you?”
“No,” Rachel said with a slight grin. “It wasn’t that long ago that you and my mother didn’t get along.”
“Rachel, that’s not the case anymore. Your mother wouldn’t do anything to hurt my recovery.” Alex took Rachel’s hand. “I think your mother is more excited about our wedding then we are. She keeps trying to talk me into a large lavish affair.”
Rachel wrinkled her nose. “You don’t want that. Right?”
“No, honey. I want a small ceremony on the beach with just family and friends.”
Rachel put her arm around Alex. “That sounds perfect.”
“So let’s get to the office.” Alex kissed Rachel’s mouth softly.
Rachel deepened the kiss. “I love you, Alex.”
“I love you too.” Rachel leaned in for another kiss.
“If you keep that up, we will never get to work.”
“I know the boss, I think she would forgive us.”
The two women laughed as they walked hand and hand to the building next door.
Alexandra knew that no matter what came up in their lives, they would work it out together. They belonged together and nothing was ever going to change that.
