One of the rare early photos of my dad’s parents: Grandpa Ed and Grandma Ann.
The only picture I’ve ever seen of my parents Libby and Don Matlin’s wedding, unearthed as I was writing this book.
One of the earliest pictures I have of my mother accompanied by her lovely note to my dad.
I love this picture of my Grandmother Rose and her salamis. I’m glad they’re kosher!
Everyone says that I drive very fast and as you can see, I started very early!
Growing up, I loved all our family pets but Eric’s dog Solo held a special place in my heart.
This is my favorite picture of my dad, taken when I was four. You can see the hearing aid in my ear, which my dad told me to tell everyone was just a big glob of bubblegum.
“I am Dorothy!”—my stage debut at eight years old in the Wizard of Oz at the Center on Deafness.
One of the moments that changed my life: me and my best friend Liz with wonderful Henry Winkler at the Center on Deafness.
From my personal pictures from Children of a Lesser God: This is the moment where director Randa Haines asked me to improvise in sign what a wave sounded like.
The pool scene from Children of a Lesser God looks like love but it wasn’t that easy. I remember very clearly Bill and me fighting during this scene. (Credit: © Paramount Pictures, all rights reserved)
I wasn’t sure how Bill would react to my Oscar win but he was very sweet and sincere. (Credit: © Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences)
I never expected to win a Golden Globe for Children of a Lesser God. Two things to look for in this picture: the missing Lee Press On Nail and the beautiful Paloma Picasso bracelet Bill had given me. (Credit: Bettmann/CORBIS)
Backstage at the Oscars in 1987. To this day I have no idea how my entire family and Liz made it backstage amidst all the security. But I was so glad to share in the moment with them. (Credit: Ron Galella/WireImage.com)
One of my favorite photographers, Greg Gorman, captured this shot of Jack and me: one of the few times Jack and I are not looking at each other! (Credit: Greg Gorman)
At the 75th Anniversary bash for Paramount Pictures, Robin Williams was hilariously signing dirty words to me and Tom Cruise and all I could say was “It wasn’t my fault!” (Credit: Time & Life Pictures/Getty Images)
At the 1987 premiere for Walker, Jennifer Beals and I were practically twin sisters with our identical curls and horn-rimmed glasses. (Credit: Time & Life Pictures/Getty Images)
This picture belies the fact that I felt like it was 190 degrees in this dress made of heavy wool, but it’s one of my favorite candid moments taken by Jack on the set of Walker.
Me and Jean Reno on the set of the French film The Man with the Golden Mask. We will remain friends forever.
He was beautiful then and he is beautiful now; Rob Lowe and I had some great times together.
Richard Dean Anderson and I shared a love of hockey. He was great fun and sweet as could be.
Two different but very dear men in my life: David Oliver, on the left, whom we lost to AIDS, and my surfer boyfriend Darrin Pappas on the right.
David E. Kelley, one of the great men in my life. I am grateful we are good friends to this day and that he found his true love with the amazing Michelle Pfeiffer.
Me and Mark Harmon goofing around on the set of Reasonable Doubts. I used to kid him by announcing that the “Sexiest Man Alive” was on the set; he hated that and I loved it.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would perform with my idol, Billy Joel. And yet here we are on the set of Sesame Street together.
When I asked David Bowie if he liked kids he said no. Then I said “but you were a child once” and he replied, “No, I was born a Rock God.” He was hilarious.
I would always run into my friend Lauren Bacall on the streets of New York. Once I told her about my problems with Bill and she saltily replied, “Men, fuck ’em.” What a gal! (Credit: WireImage)
At Swifty Lazar’s post Oscar party in 1986, I was stunned when Bill took me over to meet Hollywood royalty. There she was, Elizabeth Taylor, as gracious as she could be. (Credit: Michael Jacobs)
The national anthem that almost didn’t happen. When NBC refused to play Garth’s video for “We Shall Be Free,” he simply walked out. Garth showed up just a few moments before we were to perform when they finally played the video. ( Credit: Al Messerschmidt/WireImage.com)
I loved wielding Ty Pennington’s megaphone when I hosted Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. I used this as my holiday card one year with the caption “Do You Hear What I Hear?”
Ask any red carpet photographer in Hollywood and they would say I was pregnant for years—they were almost right. This is one of my favorite pictures of me pregnant. (Credit: © Mikael Jansson)
I’m not acting here. I was truly shocked when everyone in my family, led by Jack in a coconut bra came out on stage during a luau to surprise me for my 30th birthday in Maui.
The Matlin mishpuchah together for mom and dad’s 50th wedding anniversary including my niece and nephew, Arielle and Zach, and Marc’s longtime partner, Jay.
I never imagined myself as a desperate housewife but the creator of the series, Marc Cherry, did and I had a blast working with Felicity Huffman and Doug Savant on the show.
Not only is Jeff Daniels a brilliant comedic actor he also has a great talent for drama. I think he deserved an Emmy nomination for his work on Hallmark Hall of Fame’s Sweet Nothing in My Ear. (Credit: Erik Heinila/Hallmark Hall of Fame)
Read my hips: never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be dancing in front of 22 million viewers every week on Dancing with the Stars. Here I am with my dance partner, The Mambo King, Fabian Sanchez. (Credit: © Kelsey McNeal Zink/American Broadcasting Companies, Inc.)

One of the h
appiest days of my life was when I married Kevin Grandalski. Of course there had to be some fun, and we surprised each other—I wore a pair of crazy sunglasses that my brothers had given me and Kevin and his groomsmen wore hot pink socks.
(Left to right) Sarah, Brandon, Tyler, and Isabelle. This is just after Isabelle came home from the hospital. Kevin is a master photographer; he even got the baby to smile for the camera!
