“Married?” I said, surprised.
“Baby?” mom yelled.
“What the hell?” his dad bellowed.
Colton looked me in the eye and said, “Lacey, I can’t imagine being with anyone else and I can’t imagine a more perfect woman to be my bride. Will you marry me?”
“Yes,” I whispered without hesitation, and he kissed me.
What else was I going to say? I could never say no to Colton Reece Harrington the Third, jerk or not, he was all mine.

“Push,” Colton said, “breathe!”
I gripped the hospital bed sheets with white knuckles and suppressed the urge to tell him eff off. I’d been in labor for a few hours, and it was almost time our son came into the world.
Things had been rough after we came out to our parents and the rest of the world, but it was all good now
I’d finished up the semester but hadn’t gone back. Colton had transferred to a business program closer to home so we could be with each other every night. I was proud of him for working hard at his degree, and knew I’d go back once I felt like I could leave the baby.
Home was with our parents; they’d gotten over the news fairly quickly once they warmed to the idea of being grandparents. They’d been in the waiting room from the moment my water broke to right then. They wanted to meet their grandson the moment they were allowed in the room.
Gran was there too, she was tickled pink that she was going to be a great grandma, although as she said, she’d always been great at it.
I felt another contraction rip through me and grabbed Colton’s hand so hard I saw him grimace in pain. Part of me found that satisfying, that he could join me in this.
Half an hour later, at exactly eight nineteen in the evening, James Bradley Harrington the first was born. A squalling, healthy, red-faced baby boy, all eight pounds and three ounces of him.
I fell back to the bed exhausted as Colton cut the cord and held our little boy for the first time.
I saw his face light up as if he held the secret to the entire universe in his hands, and he turned to me to say, “I love you Lacey Harrington, more than I ever thought possible.”
Oh yeah, we’d gotten married a while back. Long before I began to show. It was a lovely affair, well attended in spite of the scandal our relationship had caused among our wealthy friends.
I reached for James and Colton set him in my arms gently. “I love you too,” I told him, “thank you for this. Thank you for your love and giving me this amazing gift.”
“I should thank you,” he said and brushed a tendril of hair off my sweaty forehead, “you’ve given me the world, Lacey, and I will spend every day of my life showing you how much it means to me.”
He kissed me and James squawked. I fussed over him and the nurse helped me calm him down.
I was too tired for company that night, but Colton allowed our family in to meet James and gush over how amazingly perfect he was.
And I had to agree, little James was as perfect as my life was, and that was pretty much perfection.
I couldn’t imagine how life could get any better than it was right then, but I knew Colton would spend a lifetime trying to prove me wrong.
