They stood on the porch, embracing, watching the boats of Avalon bob in the breeze...twenty-six miles away from all the troubles of the world. Molly turned Alec’s face to hers and kissed him again, then whispered into his ear just what special thing she had planned for him tonight.

He grinned wolfishly. “Can’t I have it now?”

“Out here? I don’t think so. But it’ll keep, mate. I promise.”

“Well then,” Alec said, “I’ll get my gift giving out of the way. Miss Jakes,” he said, pulling a small blue box out of the jacket of his tuxedo with a flourish, “I believe this has your name on it.”

Trembling, Molly accepted the gift. With a flick of her finger, she opened the box and gasped.

Alec was romantic and corny as hell, but he also had fabulous taste. Nested in white velvet was an exquisite sapphire, the color of a summer sea and the exact shade of Alec Steele’s eyes.

The ring, encircled with tiny, winking diamonds, sparkled like stars. “Oh, Alec!” she cried. “It’s beautiful. Put it on me, please.”

“Well, I’ll take that as a yes, then?”

“Yes. Take it most definitely as a yes, Alec. As long as you promise you will always trust me,” she countered, tears streaming down her face.

“With my life, love. With my life.”
