“A lot of things are wonderful now, Starla of the Sector,” he replied.
I laughed. “How long are you going to call me that, anyway? Starla of the Sector?”
“It depends.”
“On what?” I asked, growing curious as he pulled me to a stop.
“On whether or not you’d like to be Starla of somewhere else,” he said, and pulled a knotted vine from his pocket. “This means nothing to the people of the Sector, but to me, it is all there is. My father gave it to my mother when he asked to be joined with her, and now I give it to you, hoping that one day, a son that we bear will be lucky enough to find a woman who makes him feel even an ounce of the truth and beauty that you bring to my life. I used to think that I knew everything. I used to think that no one within these walls had anything to teach me. I could not have been more wrong. If you’ll allow me, I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to bring the same wonder into your world as you have brought into mine.”
“You already have,” I said, smiling hard, blinking back tears, and throwing myself into his arms. “You already have.”
