Matt Smith--The Biography
Page 19
‘I don’t, really,’ he said. ‘Any actor worth his salt has a responsibility to reinvent himself from part to part. Perhaps there’ll be a period of carryover, but I’ll take myself off to theatre for a year, or write, or direct, or – actually I might be directing something soon, in December [2012] – I can’t say too much yet, but if all goes to plan, it’s with a writer called Simon Stephens, who’s great, but it might not come off so I don’t want to say too much. But hopefully the work I do after coming off the Doctor will be of a different…tone.’
Whatever he decides to do, Matt has been massively successful in pulling off a very difficult feat: breathing new life into a very much loved fictional character that is fast becoming a national institution. And despite his youth, Matt’s slightly elongated appearance actually gives credence to his character’s other worldly origins: you could believe his Doctor was an alien in a way that not all the Doctors managed to pull off. Matt’s Doctor is one of the great ones and the series has been safe in his hands.
Elsewhere, rumours continue to swirl about a reconciliation with Daisy, although at the time of writing noting has been confirmed. But Matt is now firmly in the mainstream of British public life, with a great future to look forward to. The next regeneration of Matt’s career will be a sight to behold.
