She turned to look at him then shifted so she faced him directly, taking his face in her hands. “Jackson, there’s no place I’d rather be than New Hope, Georgia. I promise. I don’t miss my old life, I hardly think of it. I want to be here. With you. I’m happy. Happier than I’ve ever been.”
He took both of her hands and kissed them, then leaned in to kiss her mouth. “Stay here,” he said, climbing out of the tub.
“What are you doing?” she asked, laughing a little when he went dripping and naked into the bedroom. He returned a few moments later and slid back into the tub.
“Jessica,” he said, looking at the item he hid in the palm of his hand. “I know this is all happening very fast but…” He turned his face to hers, feeling unsure for a moment, feeling nervous. She sat back, her eyes wide and tear-filled. “I know how I feel about you,” he said, opening his palm to her, showing her the ring he held there. It was a simple engagement ring, the diamond not large, not small, the setting simply pretty because really, that was her: no nonsense, simply pretty. Simply perfect. “I love you and I want you to marry me.”
She smiled through tears, reaching out to tentatively touch the ring before looking back at him. She leaned in to hug him, managing to drop the ring into the tub as she did so he hugged her with one hand, reached to find the ring with the other. He loved her, he was never more sure than in that moment.
“Well?” he asked.
She nodded, crying outright when he slid the ring onto her finger, barely able to whisper the words “I love you.”
