Only a Glow

Addredoc was handling this well. He’d lived here for the however many hundreds or thousands of years he’d been alive. Narcatertus had been his only home. Now the faces and families he knew so well were looking at him with hatred—a feeling I was familiar with, but Addredoc had spent much more time here than I had in The Pitt. He’d seen grandparents of grandparents die and knew their grandkids and so on. Yet he seemed unaffected by the looks he was being given.

We stepped out into the gray, drizzly day, but quickly froze in our tracks when we saw that Azrel and Forfirith were gone! Our eyes darted around feverishly, wondering where she could have gone.

“Addredoc! Addredoc!” a female voice was calling.

We all looked out to see Addredoc’s beautiful mother galloping toward us from the street. We all ran to meet her.

“Mother! Where is Azrel?” Addredoc was asking, but his mother’s wide eyes were fixed on me. She dismounted quickly and bowed in the same fashion Addredoc had in the room.

I stepped forward and gently took her arm, straightening her. “There’s no need for that. Tell me where my sister went.”

“Thrawyn and I were watching from a distance, as we were instructed, and she seemed content for a while, feeding and talking with Lightning, when—”

“Lightning?” Ortheldo and I asked—me with confusion, Ortheldo with recognition.

“Yes. When suddenly she collapsed over his neck and her White Warrior form faded into human form. She tried to speak to Lightning but he didn’t answer her. Then she began packing him up quickly, mounted and rode off.”

“Where did she go?” Ortheldo cried.

Meddyn shook her head. “I don’t know. Thrawyn is following her. I stayed behind to let you know what happened.”

“How long ago did she ride off?”

“Not long. Please hurry. We can catch Thrawyn.”

Ortheldo and I ran as fast as we could to our horses while Meddyn and Addredoc mounted theirs. We mounted and quickly sped toward the Salynns. Galloping side by side, we dashed down the center of town with Meddyn leading the way.

“The White Warrior must have lost control of Azrel when she pulled me and herself in for that urgent meeting,” Addredoc called over the thunder of hooves.

I didn’t care. I just had to find my sister.

“When we catch up with Thrawyn, Meddyn, you stay behind with him. Ortheldo and Addredoc will come with me and we’ll go after Azrel,” I said.

“May I ask why?” Meddyn said.

“Because your son is going to teach me how to use my magic.” My narrowed eyes rested on the road ahead. “I’m going to need it.”
