Considering the number of documents that probably got destroyed when an intelligence unit relocated, it was highly unlikely that a single miniscule strip of paper contained anything that would ever be useful.
Wahlman slid it into his pocket anyway.
Because you never know.
He exited the trailer. Pickerman was still in the same spot, just outside the gate. He was still breathing. Wahlman figured Rover One would come and see about him when he failed to respond to the next radio check. Wahlman pitched his things into the sand a few feet away, and then he started walking back toward Kasey’s car.
If he’d only gotten to the complex a day sooner, he thought. Now he would have to keep running, keep searching. There would be more assassins. More hotel rooms and diners and stretches of highway that seemed to go on forever. There would be no peace of mind until this matter was completely resolved.
Which was discouraging, to say the least.
But he was alive, and Kasey was with him, and he knew the name of the intelligence unit’s commanding officer—Colonel Dorland, if Mr. Tyler had been telling the truth.
And he had a strip of paper that said acher and backorder another bat.
And that was something.
