Rain moved closer to him, placing her hand on his chest right above his heart. He loved how it felt when she touched him.
“You said you started avoiding me because you wanted to give me a choice,” she said. He nodded. “You said that your dad’s choices got your mom killed. But before that, you said that she chose to love him. So wasn’t that her choice?”
“Rain-”
“Unless love isn’t a choice at all. Unless we have absolutely no control over it.”
He still felt magnetically drawn to her, a gravitational pull that refused to let him leave her alone. “Maybe we don’t.”
“Do you really want to give me a choice?” she asked.
“Always.” It was the truth. He wanted her to have everything she wanted in this world.
“What if my choice is you?”
He could’ve sworn his heart stopped. Hunter felt his breath grow rougher, his heart pick up pace.
“Baby, it’s-”
“No,” she cut him off. “I made my choice. I choose you. I want you.”
His hands found their way to her hips, squeezing and pulling her body closer to his. An inch of space was between them, her breasts lightly brushed against his chest.
“It’s not safe,” he answered.
“Nothing in this world is safe. Not anymore.” She rose onto her toes and stretched up, pressing her lips to his neck. “But you make me feel safe.”
A growl escaped his throat. Hunter closed the space between them, his hands exploring the the arch of her back. She rose on her toes again, and this time, he met her. Their lips locked together, sweet and gentle and tasting like honey.
He wanted to be this for her, sweet and gentle, but his control was hanging on by a thread. When she opened her mouth to him and flicked her tongue out against his lip, he nearly lost it. His kiss became rough, hard, desperate. He pulled her closer, kissed her harder, explored her mouth with his own until she was moaning against him.
He broke the kiss and yanked her shirt over her head to reveal her sexy breasts. Her nipples stood erect, round and pink and begging him to taste them. He kissed her neck, her collar, her chest, and finally, took her nipple into his mouth.
He licked and sucked and nibbled as Rain writhed in his arms, each moan making his cock throb even more. He made his way to her other breast and payed it equal attention.
Finally, he pulled away and pressed his lips back to hers, guiding them both towards the small bed in the other room. The same bed where I laid, half dead, as she nursed me back to health. Hunter felt a pang of something in his chest, but it quickly faded.
“Rain,” he breathed as the back of her knees hit the bed. “If we go here, there won’t be any going back.” He had to make sure she knew. This was a line that if crossed…
“I want you, Hunter,” she smiled.
His cock threatened to break his zipper as he pushed her down on the bed. He pulled her pants down, panties too, and stared at her perfect body laying on that bed. Hunter pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it to the side, gently laying over her and pressing his lips to hers.
He kissed down her body, stopping again to give attention to her succulent breasts, and then continuing his path down her stomach. Finally he found himself at her most delicate spot. He opened her legs and knew he had to have a taste.
Hunter began licking, sucking, and drinking in the delicious taste of Rain. Her moans had him going mad, but he had to make her feel good. He had to give her more pleasure than she’d ever felt.
Her hips lifted from the bed, pushing against his mouth as he continued devouring her. Her breathing was getting quicker, her moans louder, and Hunter knew she was close.
“Hunter,” she breathed. “I-I don’t-”
Her sentence cut off as her legs tightened around his head, hips rocking against his mouth as release hit her. He stayed there, waited for her, and then rose when she released him. He shoved his pants down and quickly returned to the bed.
Hunter positioned his body over hers, pressing his lips to her neck. “Are you okay?” he asked.
She smiled. “That was amazing.”
Hunter grinned. “That was only the beginning, baby.” He positioned his cock at the entrance of her body. Reality hit him. “I don’t have protection.”
“What?” she breathed.
“Pregnant. You could get pregnant.”
Rain bit her lip and shook her head. “Can’t. It’s safe. I can’t get pregnant.”
He looked down at her, wanting to ask more about that, but he was already too far gone, and he feared he would go crazy if he denied himself any longer.
“Are you ready?”
She lifted her hips and took him inside of her, and he quickly thrust inside as the full length of his cock became blanketed in her warmth. A groan escaped his throat as a gasp escaped hers.
Heaven. She felt like Heaven.
He pulled out slowly, then pushed back in, his hips moving in rhythm with Rain’s as he made love to her. He could feel his release getting closer, but he wouldn’t come without her. Hunter angled his body so that his cock slid over her most sensitive part, and he could feel her core tightening around him as the pleasure built.
“Hunter!”
Her fingernails dug into his shoulder blades as it hit her, the contractions of her release pushing Hunter over the edge. He exploded into her, coming harder than he ever had before as ecstasy swept through his body.
He stayed there, inside of her, as their breath continued to come heavy. Slowly, it returned to normal. Hunter pressed a kiss to her collarbone and knew that he was a goner.
She had him. He was hers.
He was screwed.

Rain pulled her long-sleeved tee over her head and looked around the bunker. She didn’t have much, but this place had always been hers. She pulled her jeans on and then walked out of the room. When she didn’t see Hunter, she decided to head outdoors and see if he had gone out there.
As she ascended the ladder, she felt tenderness in her core from what she and Hunter had done a few hours earlier. She smiled at the feeling. She never wanted it to go away.
Rain pushed open the hatch and climbed outside. As she stood looking around, she felt a pang of melancholy as she thought about the place she’d called home for so long. It may not have been much, but it was hers. It was all she had.
“Hello, beautiful,” said Hunter as he approached Rain from behind. His hands found their way to her hips and wrapped around her torso. Rain sunk into his chest, allowing his warmth to envelope her. “How are you doing?” he asked.
“I’m okay,” Rain said. She turned in his arms so that she could face him. All he wore were his jeans, his bare chest making her crave him like a drug. “What are you doing out here?”
“I was preparing for our trip. I took us on a bit of a detour, as I’m sure you noticed.” His smile was brilliant.
Rain giggled. “I definitely did.”
Hunter’s hand snuck down Rain’s backside, giving her a squeeze and pulling her close. She could feel his arousal through his jeans. “In all honesty, I would love to stay here and waste days with you, but I don’t want my brothers to worry. I should get going.”
He pressed a kiss to her forehead and pulled back.
“Wait… you said ‘I should be going.’ Not we.” Rain thought aloud.
Hunter laughed. “You really are sharp.” He shook his head, a smile still etched on his lips. “I thought you’d want to stay here. I know you offered to go on the run to get fresh air, and frankly, that’s not something we have a lot of. I assumed you wouldn’t want to come back.”
His voice was low, steady, rehearsed, but Rain saw past that. He might have been saying those words as a statement, but it was clear as day that he was asking her a question.
“I’m going to come back with you, Hunter.” His eyebrows rose with her words. “I’m going to complete the mission with you, then I’m going to go back to HQ with you.” Sh
e smiled. “It’s not because it’s safer, even though it is. It’s not because there are other people there, even though that’s a perk. It’s because you’re there.”
Hunter put a hand on her cheek, and it made her feel like she was flying. “I was thinking,” she said, “maybe this can be our little escape. If we ever want to get out of there, get away from all the people… maybe we can come here. It can be our place.”
Hunter’s smile spread wider than she’d ever seen, and it melted her heart. “Our place,” he said. “I like that.”
She pressed a kiss to his chest and let her hands linger on him for a moment. She couldn’t help but be amazed by his hard body, wrapped in muscle and strength. It was hard to look at him and not want him. Hunter was something special.
“We should get going.” Hunter looked toward the sky. “It’ll probably be a few hours of walking.”
“Okay,” Rain said. “We need to get you a shirt!”
Hunter chuckled. “What? You don’t like the look?” He jokingly flexed his muscles.
“Oh, I do. A little too much,” Rain admitted. “Now, let’s get you a shirt.”
Hunter’s laugh was contagious, and Rain found herself laughing too as they descended into the bunker. When Rain was only a few steps from the bottom, Hunter grabbed her waist and pulled her from the ladder. She yelped playfully as he pulled her close and kissed the spot where her neck met her shoulder.
“I don’t think I’ve ever played before,” she giggled.
Hunter spun her around in his arms, a brilliant smile still on his face. “Well I really love playing with you.”
“I love playing with you, too.” She did. The joy she felt was overwhelming, something she’d never felt before.
Hunter cradled her face in his hand and then leaned down to kiss her, and it made her entire body tingle. Then he walked into the bedroom, presumably to get his shirt so the two of them could get on the road.
Rain walked over to her little kitchen and gently slid her hand across the table. She had spent so many nights at that table, and yet all of her best memories there were with Hunter.
She suddenly remembered lying to him at that table, and her stomach grew tight.
You’re still lying to him. She scolded herself.
What did that matter? It was all in the past, and they were moving forward. What he didn’t know wouldn’t kill him.
But it might hurt… Rain found that she felt like a ticking time bomb, just waiting to explode and bring everyone around her down with her.
She began humming quietly to herself, nursery rhymes that she’d been singing to the children at the daycare, rhymes she used to sing to herself when things got too scary to face, rhymes she’d sang to Hunter when he was half alive on her little cot and she had no clue if he’d ever open those golden eyes of his.
“Hey baby,” Hunter said as he sauntered from the bedroom. “Didn’t you give me medication when I was unconscious?”
“Y-yes.”
“Where’d you get it?”
She turned towards the storage space above the kitchen countertop. Hunter must have followed her stare, because he quickly strode over to the cabinets and began opening them, searching.
He pulled out each pill bottle he found, examining the label before moving onto the next one. Rain watched him, trying to focus on the present and not the past that was threatening to ruin it.
“Got it! B… Baz… a…cah... don… I don’t know, whatever the hell this says. This is the one!” Hunter exclaimed.
“What’s that for?” Rain asked him.
He shrugged. “No idea. I just know they need it.”
“Will this be enough?”
Hunter looked in the cabinet again. “Well, being that you have six bottles of it in here and they asked me for three, I’m going to say yes.”
Rain forced a chuckle.
Hunter turned and looked at her, raising an eyebrow and cocking his head. “You alright?”
“Yes!” Rain replied too quickly.
“Are you sure?”
She let out a long, slow breath and schooled her expression. “Yes,” she said calmly. “I’m fine.”
“You have a beautiful singing voice.”
Rain felt heat rush to her cheeks. “You heard that?”
Hunter just laughed. “It’s a small space.” He paused a moment, and then continued. “You know, I heard you sing to me when I was unconscious.”
Rain felt her eyes widen. “You did?”
Hunter nodded. “It made me think of my mother. She used to sing to me when I was little. She had a beautiful singing voice, too. Whenever I cried, she would sing to me.”
Butterflies flitted in Rain’s chest at the warmth in Hunter’s remark. “She sounds like such a wonderful mother.”
Hunter’s smile spread wide. “She was the best.” His hand stroked her arm. “You’d be an incredible mother, too, Rain.”
Rain let out a sigh and felt a familiar ache of sadness settle in. She just shook her head. “So what do we do now?”
“Well, now that we don’t have to hunt down a supply store…” Hunter trailed off, his lips spreading into a wicked grin. He put his hand suggestively on her hip, raising an eyebrow and winking.
Rain felt her nipples perk up with excitement, a response she was still not used to. Her cheeks hurt from smiling so much… what a wonderful problem to have.
She decided to play along by slowly swinging her hip to the side and pouting her lips. “What are you implying?” she asked, voice huskier than she had expected.
Hunter groaned and it sent a shiver down Rain’s spine. He lowered his head and their lips met. The kiss was slow and deep, not like their other kisses. Rain opened her mouth to him as a moan escaped her.
All she could think about was the pleasure he’d given her, the way her body felt right then as he touched her, waking up all those nerve endings he’d lit on fire when he’d made love to her. She ached for him to take her again, to pick her up and carry her to the bed, to kiss her up and down, to lose himself in her. And this time, she’d do the same for him. She’d kiss him all over, she’d lose herself in his pleasure, she’d make him feel better than he’d ever felt before.
Rain found herself pressing against him and growing desperate for more.
“Hey, baby,” he said against her lips. Rain opened her eyes to look into his. “You started saying something earlier, when we were in bed. What was it?”
Rain’s brain was mush, all she could think of was the feeling Hunter was giving her now, the feeling he gave her then, the feeling she wanted more of. Her confusion must have showed on her face, as Hunter continued.
“When I was kissing you,” he started, pressing a quick peck to her lips, “down here.” His fingers lightly danced over her thighs, then rose up to the spot that ached for him. She leaned into his touch as another moan escaped her. “What were you saying, baby?”
Rain urged her memory forward, and finally, after some painful digging, the moment came back to her. Right before the pleasure hit, before it overflowed.
“I didn’t know what was happening,” she admitted. She could feel Hunter’s length pressing into her, and all she could think about was feeling him inside of her again. “I’ve never felt anything like that before.”
The only thing Rain had known before Hunter was pain. From him.
But Hunter… Hunter made her feel good. So good.
“Never?” Hunter asked, lifting her up and sitting her on the counter. She spread her knees and he eased in between them.
“Nothing ever felt so good,” she said, leaning her head back as Hunter began to kiss her neck.
“Well, sweetheart,” he said as he flicked his tongue against her skin. She squeezed her legs around him and urged him closer. “That was only the start.”
She shivered.
Hunter pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it to the floor, which made Rain giggle; he should’ve just left it off. He smiled, probably coming
to the same conclusion she had, and then fell back into her, kissing her hungrily as she let go of all thoughts that weren’t Hunter.
Chapter Nine
HUNTER COULDN’T WIPE THE smile from his face as he walked through the familiar hallways of HQ. He was a grown man, thirty-one years old, and he felt like a boy for the first time in his life. He felt the youthful innocence that had been stolen from him as a child, and it felt good.
Rain was breathing new life into him.
They had spent three days together at that bunker. For the first time since he’d returned home, he felt hope again… hope for a life outside of the Resistance.
Being back in these halls, though, he had to admit that reality was setting in once more. He was a leading member of the Resistance, a trained fighter, a professional killer. He couldn’t be fantasizing about relationships or families or joys that would never be his to have.
It was weird, though, to want those things. Hunter didn’t think he had it in him. He’d always known his place; he might have fought against it when he was a teenager, but even then, he knew where he belonged.
He wasn’t so sure anymore.
He entered his workroom and sat down at the desk. He had brought the journal with him, today, figuring a little reading might help him with his planning. Hunter truly did think that reading this journal might give him just the right amount of insight into his target to take him out, but really, he knew that strategy wasn’t the driving force behind the act.
Hunter’s mom had loved reading. He’d never been a fan.
Sitting in his hard wooden chair felt good, an odd return to normalcy that he hadn’t felt for some time. He stared at the papers on his desk. There were maps, outlines, charts, images of key players… it was organized chaos and only Hunter could successfully cipher through his own mess.
He couldn’t pull his mind from Rain, no matter how hard he tried to focus on his plans. Giving in, he leaned back in his chair and picked up the journal. He opened to the page he’d left off at.
