Jamie laughed, and felt something relaxing in herself that had been knotting tight since the news that Zander had hired a new PA. No matter what, Alex was still hers. She had a ring on him after all, and the twins. She reached across the table and slipped her hand into her husband's, giving him a smile over the top of the wine glasses.

“What do you say we finish up dinner and get out of here, Mr. Reid?”

His eyebrows lifted, and then his expression settled into a grin that had a definite edge of hunger. “You know, Mrs. Reid,” he said, “I think I would like that.”

Alex motioned to the waiter, gave his card for the bill, and then stood up and held out his arm for her.

Jamie laid her hand over it, letting him walk her out into the warm night. “Where to for dessert?”

He looked thoughtful. “Well, there are a few hotels in the area, and I don't mind paying the price to rent for the night, if you want that.”

Jamie considered it, but she shook her head. She didn't want to make love to Alex in a strange bed. The trouble was, home was off-limits with Mark and Christine in the main house, and she couldn't really ask them to sit downstairs and keep an eye on the baby monitor while she and Alex were rolling around in bed together.

“Tell you what,” Alex said. “I'll start driving, and you tell me where.”

She nodded and once the valet brought their car, they climbed in and headed out. Alex turned the car out onto the street, and Jamie watched the buildings slide by them, all of them still brightly lit.

“See anywhere promising?” he asked as he turned onto a new road and they moved past places where the lights were turned off, the all-night life of the city giving way to its edges, where people slept at more sensible times.

Another turn, and they were on a street that seemed almost deserted, just trees around them. A park or something. He stopped the car, and Jamie remembered with a little rush of heat the time they'd been together in his father’s truck and stopped under a bridge because of the rain. Alex, she could tell, was thinking about the same event, because the look he gave her was hot enough to make her weak in the knees.

“How about here?” he asked, and all Jamie could do was nod.

He was already reaching for her, and she slid across the seat to straddle him, her dress sliding up her thighs. Alex's hands were immediately on them, big and warm, stroking over her skin from the curve of her hip to her knee.

“Damn, I've missed this,” he groaned, pulling her down for a kiss.

Jamie didn't answer. Her mouth was a little busy. She pressed close, rocked down against him, and felt him already hard in his expensive suit pants.

They pulled back, panting, to get a little air, and then Jamie stole another kiss, and another. Alex's hands hand slid down to cup the curves of her buttocks, and he was using the grip to pull her closer.

She moaned against his lips. “If we ever have to go this long without sex again, I'm going to mutiny,” she said when they'd broken apart a third time.

“I'll mutiny with you,” Alex said, and there was laughter in his voice, but there was also a rough edge that said just how turned on he was, and it made Jamie want him even more.

  She needed him inside her.

“Come on,” she said, shifting up so that she could pull her panties down and off, flinging them onto the other side of the seat. Her hands went for the fastenings of his pants, and he reached down to help her.

“No foreplay?” he teased, looking up into her eyes.

Jamie looked back at him, eyes narrowed. “Foreplay is round two,” she growled, and Alex dropped his head back against the seat with a groan as her hand curled around his length, pulling him from his boxer briefs.

She stroked him once, twice, just to feel him in her hand. He rocked up into the touch, and the tip of his cock stroked against her sex, making it her turn to moan. Alex's hands closed around her hips, and she guided him into place so she could slide down, his hands on her helping her move.

He felt bigger than she'd remembered. They'd had sex since the twins were born, but not for more than a week, and another moan caught in Jamie's throat as she sank all the way down until her thighs rested against his. Fuck, he was perfect. She lifted up, and started to move, her arms wrapping around Alex's neck for support.

  “Wait,” he said.

Jamie looked up at him, eyebrows lifted. If he thought he was going to make her take it slow, he had another think coming, but he didn't look like he wanted to go slow any more than she did.

“I want this off,” he hissed, and then his hands were on the hem of her dress, yanking it up over her head. Jamie lifted her arms for him to remove it.

“Better,” he said when it had joined her underwear on the other side of the car.

He unfastened her bra, and tossed it over with the rest.

Jamie had a split-second moment of concern. What if they were caught like this? Wasn’t having sex in a parked car illegal? But the worries were driven away a moment later when Alex’s hands curled around her hips again, rocking her down against him. Jamie suddenly didn’t care. If they were caught, Alex could handle it. In the meantime, she intended to make the most of the time that they had.

“Fuck,” Alex said under his breath when she started moving again. “Jamie. You’re perfect.”

She smiled, and leaned down to brush her lips against his, making his chin tip up so that he could chase her mouth. One of his hands lifted from her hip, wrapping around the back of her neck instead and drawing her down for a real kiss. Jamie definitely wasn’t complaining.

Neither of them was going to last long. She could already feel it. The rhythm of Alex’s hips against hers was uneven, more want than finesse, and it was the best thing she’d felt in ages.

“You’re so hot,” she said, kissing him again. “I still can’t believe that you’re mine sometimes.”

His hand tightened on her hip, and he wrapped the other arm close around her. “I’m yours, Jamie. Always. Nothing is ever going to change that.” His voice dropped low. “Nothing.”

Another roll of their hips, and Jamie clutched at him, pleasure pulling tight.

“Me, too,” she panted against the curve of his throat. “Me, too, Alex. I love you so much.”

They moved against each other, the car filling with the sounds of their breath and their bodies and then Jamie was coming, pleasure running hot from the base of her spine through every nerve, and she felt Alex following her over the edge.

Her head lifted from his shoulder after a moment, and she looked up into those gorgeous blue eyes that had caught her right from the moment she met him, searching for the tiny brown flecks that you couldn’t see unless you were close. Alex leaned up and kissed her, this time gentle. When they pulled back from each other, he slid his fingers into her hair.

“How did I get so lucky?” he asked softly.

Jamie laughed. “That's my question. Not yours.”

“No.” Alex shook his head, still looking into her eyes like he could find the answer to life there. “I have two beautiful babies with the most gorgeous, amazing woman on the face of the Earth. I get to ask how I managed that, after all the ways that I messed up.”

“If you're thinking about the last time,” Jamie said. “Don't. It's over and done.” She smiled. “And you've more than made up for all that nonsense about how you couldn't love anyone. You've loved me better than any man I've ever been with. In every sense of the word.”

Alex laughed then. “You know,” he said, “I was going to lay you out in the seat, but I don't think that would work very well in this car.”

“Backseat,” Jamie said, and threw him a wink before sliding over the center console to stretch herself out in the backseat of the vehicle.

It wasn't quite as roomy as the truck they'd been in once upon a time, but it was good enough. Alex would just have to scrunch a little.

The door opened, and then Alex was in with her, kneeling between her legs and closing the door behind
himself again.

“I think I remember you promising me foreplay for round two,” he said, looking down at her in the dim light.

“Planning on making me beg again?”

He shook his head. “No. No begging. Not unless it's for more.” His grin was dangerous, and then his hands were on her thighs, sliding one over so that her leg curved over the edge of the seat with her foot resting on the carpeted floor. “Ready?” he asked.

  “Fuck, yes,” Jamie answered.

He leaned down and ran his tongue over her pussy. Jamie gasped, arching up into his mouth. Her hands searched for something to hold on to, but the edges of the seat were plush and smooth and her grip slid off them. She tangled a hand in Alex's hair.

His tongue flicked over her clit, then slid down. She tossed her head back against the leather with a moan. With heat still sparking under her skin from her first orgasm, Alex's tongue lit her up like a live wire. The leg that had been pressed up against the back of the seat dropped down to rest over his shoulder, and he moved in closer, tongue stroking her clit again until she almost screamed with the pleasure. The hand that wasn't holding her thigh anymore reached up so that he could play with her nipples, tugging and rolling them between his fingertips.

“Alex,” she breathed, fingers curling tighter in his hair. “Oh, fuck. Alex.”

He licked faster. She stared sightlessly up at the ceiling of the car, seeing it without registering what it was because all of her attention was on Alex and his tongue. Never again. She wasn't going this long without ever again. It was torture.

“Going to come for me, baby?” he lifted his head long enough to ask.

“Yes,” Jamie hissed in answer. “Don't stop.”

  “No intention of it.”

He leaned down again, and this time he didn't pull away, kept moving his tongue over her clit until her orgasm hit her with a rush of heat. Her spine arched, thighs pressing tight against Alex's shoulders, and Jamie sobbed his name, the syllables tripping over each other as they left her mouth.

This time he pulled all the way back, sitting up on his knees with a smug look on his face.

“Oh, my goodness…” Jamie said from where she was still lying on her back.

  “Felt good?”

“Yeah,” she answered, laughing a little with the pleasure of it and the closeness. “It was good, Alex. Damn.”

“Perfect,” he said, leaning down to kiss her. “Because that was the intention.”

The hand she'd had in his hair slid back into it as they kissed, Jamie holding Alex close. He leaned in so that he balanced his weight against one of his forearms, the heat of his body against hers. He was still fully dressed, and Jamie fumbled blinding for the waistband of his pants, trying to shove them down his thighs. Alex helpfully shoved them farther down himself, and her legs wrapped around his hips, drawing him close as he slid inside her again.

There was none of the frantic need of the first time. This was slow, and intimate. Exactly what she had needed after the rush of desire in the first round.

“I love you,” Alex breathed against her ear. “I promise that I'm going to spend the rest of my life showing you that, Jamie Reid.”

She smiled, arching into him even as she pulled him down closer. “I'll hold you to that,” she said.

He bit the curve of her neck, gently enough that it didn't hurt, and then pressed a kiss to the same spot. Jamie rocked up to meet the motions of his hips. He was warm and strong above her, and close, and Jamie thought she could do this forever if they didn't have to get back home. She missed the all-night sessions they'd had before. But this was good, and it would be enough. It was enough that she'd had this time with him at all after so long without, although now that she'd had a taste again she was going to crave it even more when they got back home.

But then, she always craved him.

Orgasm built slow, as steady as the motion of Alex inside her. This time, when they came together it was with sighs. Jamie heard her name on Alex's tongue, letting his slip from her mouth again as they both came down. Her arms wrapped around him, and they lay like that for a long moment, his face against her shoulder and his warmth bracketing her, the outside world far away beyond the windows of the car.

“Thank you,” Jamie said when she finally spoke again. “For tonight. I really needed it.”

“We both needed it,” Alex said, lifting his head so that he could steal one more kiss. “It was long overdue.”

“Well, now that we know Mark and Christine can take care of the twins, maybe we can steal a little more time with each other,” Jamie said, smiling up at him.

  “Maybe we can,” Alex said.

He sat up and helped her to sit, too. Getting his pants back up in the tight space of the backseat proved to be more than a little difficult, and both of them were laughing by the time he got them fastened. Jamie crawled back into the front seat to get dressed in her own clothes.

It was almost sad when Alex started the car, turning it around and starting back toward home. But the twins were waiting, and with that knowledge Jamie felt a new rise of worry. She hadn't checked on them all night. What if something had happened? She hadn't heard her phone ring, but what if something was wrong with it? What if she just hadn't heard? She reached for it in her purse and yanked it out, checking the screen for notifications. There was nothing. Jamie relaxed a little, and sent a text message to Mark asking how the night was going.

The reply was almost instant. Everything’s fine. Kids r sound asleep. No rush.

Jamie let out a little sigh of relief and sank back into her seat.

“Everything okay?” Alex asked, in a tone that said he already knew the answer.

She nodded. “Mark says the twins are sound asleep and that everything is fine.”

Alex smiled and pulled back onto the main road they'd left to get to the deserted little side street. “I told you it would all be okay.” His tone was gentle instead of condescending. “We'll be home soon.”

“I know,” Jamie said and she reached out to take his hand again, watching the light from the streetlights move across his face.

How had she gotten so lucky? She had Alex. And she had Benton and Lillianna. She had Mark and Christine. Her father. She'd gone from a family that hardly gave her the time of day to one that she treasured every minute with. Her hand squeezed Alex’s a little tighter, and she felt him squeeze back. They’d had some new stresses with the birth of the twins, but everything was going to be fine.

Sometimes life really could be perfect.

  Chapter 6

“So,” Mark said as he and Christine washed the crumbs off the twins’ hands in preparation for feeding them, even though they would probably get formula all over themselves instead as soon as they were within arms’ reach of it, bottle or no bottle. “I assume you know that I'm Alex's brother Mark, and I know that you're Jamie's sister Christine, but beyond that I don't really know very much.”

Christine looked up from the washcloth she was very patiently trying to capture Lillianna's hand with, and offered him a smile she didn't look like she was entirely certain about.

“That's all there is to know, really,” she said softly.

She didn't sound like the sister Jamie had described to him before. They’d met and chatted once before, but so much had been going on at the time that he hardly remembered it. Although, he could see why Jamie had never let him meet her before the abrupt turnaround that had apparently happened in Christine's attitude. She was gorgeous. A little on the thin side, but filling out a little now, and all that blonde hair... Mark pulled his thoughts away from the direction that they were headed. He wasn't going to hit on Jamie's sister.

As much as he liked Jamie, Christine wasn't the same person, and approaching her in the hopes that she would be was just going to hurt her and frustrate him. That, and Jamie probably wouldn’t approve. So he offered a smile that was friendly instead of flirty, and finished cleaning Benton's hands.

  “I'm
going to be opening a country club,” he offered, for something to talk about. “Alex and I just bought the land.”

Christine looked up at him. “That sound like a tough job,” she said. “Isn't there a lot to worry about with a place like that? Management. Profits. Upkeep.”

“It's not going to be easy,” Mark agreed. “The golf course is already in place, but we're going to have to do some renovations to make sure that it's really up to the quality of the rest of the club. And we've got to put in the club house, as well as a vineyard.”

“So when you say country club,” she said, “you mean really upscale.”

“Oh, yeah,” Mark said. “That's where the real money is. You've got to get the rich people to come in and play.”

She laughed a little, very quietly, and Mark kind of wanted to give her a hug. Even when she smiled there was still a kind of sadness that lingered around the edges of her mouth. He wondered if a hug would be considered brotherly or inappropriate, and decided that maybe he should wait a while before making that decision. It wouldn't hurt to get to know her better first.

“What do you do?” Mark asked.

“Nothing, at the moment,” Christine said. “I'm staying with my dad. I guess I kind of help take care of him. But he's pretty much recovered from his surgery now.” She looked down at Lillianna instead of up at him. “I'm going to start looking for a job soon. He's retired; he can't afford to support both of us indefinitely.”

“What kind of jobs are you looking at?”

She scoffed. “Well, that's kind of the question. I don't really have much of a résumé. Most places aren't looking for a woman in her mid-twenties who's never worked a day in her life.”

It was obviously a sore point with her, and Mark kind of wished that he hadn't raised it. Jamie had said something about that he remembered, back when she and her sister had still been fighting. He should have thought of it before he asked.

  “Can you answer phones?”

Christine looked up, her eyebrows drawing together. “What?”
