“I don’t need a lecture Ginger!” Sparks barked. Ginger wasn’t one to back down though.

“You don’t? Seems like you do to me. Because I have seen this train- wreck coming from a mile away and we discussed this before but things are getting worse, not better. I can’t just stand here and watch it all hap- pen. Dez is going to need him. They have to mourn the loss of their child. She has to learn to walk again. And she has a career. She worked hard to get to where she is and Bentley is a big part of that. What he does reflects on her, and it reflects on you. You’re the leader of this thing. If you don’t get this in check, his actions might destroy not just him, but all of you. Are you willing to let that happen?”

“What do you want me to do? I mean, shit Ginger, I try my fucking best but Bentley is a grown ass man. Can’t nobody control a grown ass man like nobody could control your grown ass when you were out here wilding the fuck out!” Sparks regretted the words as soon as he said them.

“I’m sorry Ginger,” he said immediately.

“Don’t be. You’re right, Sparks. You’re right. I’m sorry. I’m doing the same thing to you that I did to Dez when I got saved. I’m getting preachy and holier than thou, and—” Sparks cut her off.

“It’s okay. We’re both emotional right now. But, you’re right Ginger. Something has to change. I just don’t know what to do,” Sparks admitted. Ginger sighed and threw her hands up in frustration.

“Bentley is a grown ass man. You’ve been looking after him and clean-

ing up his messes and I more than anyone knows that can make things worse. Codependency, enabling, that’s a road you don’t want to travel. You can’t change an addict. An addict has to want to change themselves,”

  Ginger said.

“You think he’s an addict? This fast? I mean, it’s only been a couple of months that he’s been out of control…”

Ginger held her tongue. She knew that addicts weren’t made, they were born, but she didn’t know if Bentley had been born that way and didn’t want to assume or spread negative energy.

“Let’s hope this is a phase and it stops,” Ginger said. But the two of them already knew that Bentley was in way too deep to just stop what he was doing. And neither of them had the solution. Dez sat alone in her room for the first time after awakening. It had been hard getting everyone to leave, especially after they discovered that she and Bentley were newly engaged, but she needed some time alone so she pretended to fall asleep until everyone left. Now, it was eerily silent, but she didn’t mind. So many conflicting thoughts were rushing through her head. She’d had such a good time catching up with the Lopez’s as every- one fawned all over her and loved on her. But every now and then she felt overwhelmed with sadness as she played with Marisol’s kids, knowing she might never have any of her own, or when she thought about nev- er walking the way that everyone else in the room, including the babies, seemed to take for granted.

She felt guilty. There was no reason to feel sorry for herself. She should be grateful. She was grateful. The Lopez’s were the only people she cared about from back home, the reason she’d even come to Miami in the first place, and now they were reconnected. And Ginger and Bentley and Sparks, they were all there for her too. The unimaginable had happened and none of them had left her side. They’d all proven their love and loyalty. They were a family. It was the greatest gift that life could offer. And she was going to get married to the man of her dreams. But Dez wasn’t happy. She wanted to walk down the aisle, to dance at her wedding reception, to show off her legs and switch her ass while men drooled over her. She wanted to be onstage, to perform for her fans. She had a family, but the other thing she’d always craved, fame, now seemed out of reach. It seemed like she could never keep a hold of both things at the same time. How long would she have to sacrifice personal happiness for fame and vice versa?

I’m awake! I didn’t think I would ever be able to say that. But I can’t walk. What

the fuck do I do now?

  COMING SOON

15 years ago, Dez had everything in life that a woman could want: fame, fortune and a baby growing in her belly fathered by the hottest man in hip hop. She also had something no one would want, like a woman bitter enough to want her dead and crazy enough to try to have her assassinated. A bullet ended her child’s life and her career, but it didn’t end Dez. And now with steely determination she’s com- ing back for her throne as the Queen of Hip-Hop and all the spoils that go along with it…
