“We aren’t going to let him get away with it,” Arrow growled. “We’re doing this for a reason, and whether you guys believe that it’s going to happen or not, it will. Whatever you think is justice for what Hawk is doing, that’s what he’s going to get. If you want to take it down and bust them ourselves or if you want to get Hawk walked up behind bars, either way, we’re going to get him and the son of a bitch’s never going to forget that he shouldn’t mess with the Pythons.”

“Amen to that, brother,” Thatcher said with a grin. They high-fived, and for the first time in what felt like centuries, Arrow truly felt like part of the group again. He went back to his apartment and sat down at his kitchen table, looking fondly at the little succulent in the windowsill. Maybe everything was going to be all right after all. With someone like Ari in his life, it was hard not to believe that things could work out for the best.

  ***

Despite his optimism from the night before, Arrow didn’t see anything suspicious from the house. It was obvious that hawk seemed to be hiding his underground activities from his niece, and unless she saw him at work for herself, it was unlikely that she would ever be persuaded that her uncle was an evil piece of shit.

  “Arrow!”

Arrow’s heart lurched at the sound of Ari’s voice, and soon she was rushing into the carry out, her eyes wild and her chest heaving as she struggled to catch her breath.

“What’s the matter?” Arrow asked, running toward her.

Blind panic consumed him. If he was unable to protect her even with her just being a few yards away, then he might as well consider himself worthless.

“Did something happen to you? Are you all right?”

“It’s not me,” Ari said. She was close to tears and Arrow frowned. It was heart-wrenching to see her so upset.

“Is something wrong with your uncle?” He asked. He could only hope.

“No, my uncle is away for the day again,” Ari said, her sweet voice making Arrow feel immensely guilty for what he was thinking.

It was a good thing she couldn’t read his mind, even if her eyes made him suspect she could sometimes.

“I need your help though. Follow me.”

Ari took off running, and before Arrow could ask any other questions, he followed her. They crossed the field directly across from the carry out and ran horizontally until they were deep in the woods of the ranch. It was the first time Arrow had been so far in on Hawk’s property. When Ari finally stopped running, they were standing under a small tree in front of a panting calf, lying on its side with his eyes staring at them in fear and confusion.

“What the hell is this?” Arrow asked. “Is it yours?”

“No, I don’t know where it came from, actually. But I need you to help me drive this poor thing to the vet. We need to get it some help, or I’m afraid that it isn’t going to make it. It’s just a baby!”

Arrow studied the calf, and glanced at Ari. If the animal didn’t make it, she would obviously be heartbroken. The idea of that happening just wasn’t acceptable. Still, there was only so much one man could do.

“How do you know that there is any help for it anyway?” Arrow asked.

He felt uncomfortable around the calf for some reason. The physical embodiment of pain and suffering tended to make him want to look the other way and ignore the suffering of others. It was just too damn sad.

“I just do. We can’t risk letting it die here if it could get help” Ari said, her chin jutting out with determination.

It didn’t feel very good being under the scrutiny of those righteous blue eyes of hers.

“If you were in its position you would want and need help too, just as much as the bird does. We have to try either way, even if it’s hopeless. If we don’t, then we are no better than monsters. We have a responsibility to help those in need, don’t we?”

“Tell that to your uncle,” Arrow muttered.

“What?” Ari asked, clearly perplexed. “Arrow come on, this is important. Please, help me get it to your car. I know of a veterinary clinic for farm animals. It’s not too far away from here, but we can’t carry it. I don’t have a vehicle and I don’t think it would be safe to take it in the wagon. You’re my only shot. I know Mel would understand. Please just tell me that you’re going to help.”

“All right, kid, all right,” Arrow said with a deep sigh. “Let’s get this damn thing some help. But I need to wrap it up so it doesn’t bleed all over the interior of my car. And you know, because a loss of blood can be dangerous.”

“Sure,” Ari said. “But only if you know that you’re not going to hurt it any more than absolutely necessary.”

“I don’t think I’ll hurt it,” Arrow said.

What he didn’t tell her was that he had been fully trained as a medic by the MC. Whenever there were turf wars or any kind of activities involving violence between MC and other emcees in the area, the hospital likes to refuse treatment to the bikers, saying that they got themselves involved in those problems for themselves and if they didn’t want to get hurt, then they shouldn’t engage in such risky activity and waste hospital resources and time.

Besides that, a lot of the men in the MC had warrants out for their arrest, and if they were stuck at the hospital for any amount of time, and the hospital staff knew it, then it was possible that the police would come by and take them down. The relationship between the pythons and the police department was already rocky enough without causing any further strain to it.

Ari was quiet as she watched Arrow tear his shirt into one long strand of fabric, and then tie it around the calf’s wound. She held the baby’s head in her hand and stroked its forehead while she watched, both of them holding their breath as Arrow worked.

“All right,” Arrow said, bending down and lifting the calf up over his shoulders, careful not to press the wound into any area that might hurt it too much. “Let’s go.”

They walked silently to the car, the atmosphere between them somber now with the little calf in tow. It had to be in pain; it was a nasty wound, but it kept a calm face. Animals were stoics. Arrow had done his best to act like them. Even when something hurt like hell, you didn’t show it. Maybe that’s why he hadn’t felt like he had anybody to turn to when he was struggling with his addiction. Sometimes, you had to trust in brotherhood. Maybe if he ever earned their trust back, he would this time around.

“Easy does it,” Arrow said, easing the calf into the back seat of his car. Ari hopped in beside it, holding the calf still once again as she had before by the tree as Arrow had bandaged its wound.

With a heavy sigh, Arrow turned the ignition and soon, they were off, Ari barking directions from the back seat and Arrow following them. Almost as if they had been together for years.

But Arrow had to drive the thought away. There were more important matters at hand. And besides that, he had to stop thinking about Ari like this. They weren’t supposed to be together. A man should date a woman closer to his own age.

Still, every once in a while, Arrow’s eyes would find themselves drawn to the rearview mirror, and they would linger on the sweet, loving curves of Ari’s lips, or focus on her oceanic eyes as she soothed the calf in the back seat with her. Arrow sighed. She was something special, alright, even if she was related to Hawk.

  Chapter 10

“The calf is going to be all right,” Ari said, relief flooding her body.

She had been pacing around in the little waiting room, Arrow’s broad body stooped in the corner on a small chair and watching her. She had told him he could go back to work, but he was determined to stick it out with her, no matter how long it might take.

“Good,” Arrow said, standing up with a sigh, his handsome face gazing down at hers. “So, what do we do with it now?”

“The vet knows who it belongs to. They’re going to be billed for their negligence, and the calf is going to end up going to a rescue, since this has happened before.”

  “Wow,” Arrow said, shaking hi
s head. “Some people are so fuckin’ dumb.”

Ari laughed quietly to herself. He was a good person, whether he tried to put on his tough guy persona or not.

“Let’s get out of here,” she said quietly, taking his hand. He froze when she touched him, and he cleared his throat anxiously.

  “Yeah,” he agreed.

They walked to the car together, Arrow barely gripping her hand, his grip relaxed as if he were afraid of hurting her or something. It was cute in a way. Just because she was small didn’t mean that she was fragile though, and she squeezed his hand before they separated.

He didn’t say anything, but she could feel the fire in his eyes as he watched her climb into the passenger’s side of the car. He stood alone outside for a moment before finally getting in himself, and they drove back to the ranch without another word.

When they arrived, Arrow parked at the carry out and walked Ari across the street. She led him to the back yard.

“Wait here,” Ari said. “A few more minutes away from the store won’t hurt anything. Mel already knows how long these things can take.”

Arrow nodded, his lips tight as he watched her disappear into the house. Her heart was hammering from the intensity of his gaze. It was almost cruel for a man to look that good. Strong, capable, and somehow, maybe even a little bit dangerous.

“Here,” Ari said, emerging with her wallet and a glass of lemonade. “I’ll pay you for your time, and the gas of course. What’s the wage at the carry-out? Mel pays a little over minimum wage for night shift I’d guess…”

She handed Arrow the glass and began rooting through the bills in her wallet and Arrow frowned.

“Oh, come on,” he said. “Put that away.”

He emptied the cup and sat it down on the small patio table, and Ari shook her head.

“No, you went out of your way to help me and help that poor calf, so you deserve something,” Ari said, holding out a small bundle of bills.

  Arrow pushed the money away.

“I don’t want your money,” he said, his eyes dark and dangerous.

Ari was trapped in his gaze, her heart pounding wildly as Arrow studied her. They didn’t speak; they didn’t have to. The tension between them spoke for itself.

“Well then tell me what you do want,” Ari whispered, taking a tentative step toward the man.

He stiffened as she drew near, but he didn’t back away. Again, she made a bold, spur of the moment decision and took Arrow’s large hand in her own. She kissed his cheek gently.

Ari cried out in surprise when suddenly, Arrow’s hands were on her shoulders and she was briefly weightless as his strong arms thrust her body against the side of the house. Ari’s body was immediately on fire, and she gasped softly as his lips grazed the nape of her neck. Another shot of warmth surged through her body and she closed her eyes as Arrow held her body close to his. She could feel the urgency of his longing, the generous muscle resting against her thigh, and she wanted nothing more than for him to take her fully. It was the most sensual experience of her life.

“We shouldn’t be doing this,” Arrow grumbled, sampling her flesh with fervor.

His strong hands made their way up her shirt, feeling the tense muscles of her abdomen and roaming over the soft slope of her breasts. It was lucky she had been wearing a bra that day when she had gone out to check on the garden and had heard the pitiful sound of the calf attempting to stand up and make its way back home.

“Don’t stop,” Ari pleaded softly into Arrow’s ear.

He stared hard at her, and she could tell that his determination to stop was waning.

Ari gripped Arrow’s face in her hands and pulled him forward, kissing him passionately on the lips. Even if he was older than she was, there was something in him that made her want nothing more than to be close to him; to feel just what it was about him that drew him to her. She wasn’t going to let him go, not now.

He surrendered to the kiss, his passion re-ignited as their bodies entwined. Arrow hoisted Ari’s legs up around his waist and she nearly went crazy as a hot rush of longing overpowered her. She wanted him so badly. They had waited long enough.

Arrow seemed to feel the same way and quickly began to strip Ari’s shirt off, unclasping her bra in record speed and dropping his hot mouth around her nipple. It sent a shocking wave of heat to her loins and she bucked her hips against him involuntarily.

Arrow peered at her, his eyes dark and flashing with a primal need that only Ari’s body could satisfy. He growled as he stripped her, and then himself, and their bodies were suddenly pressed together, soft and sweet, exactly the way she wanted it to be.

And then he was inside of her, and Ari nearly shouted with the unexpected pleasure of feeling his cock prying her open, every inch of him massaging the sensitive nerves inside of her until she was overwhelmed by deep pleasure unlike anything she had ever known.

She knew that Arrow didn’t want to take advantage of her, but he couldn’t say he did when she had made the first move, right? He was too rigid and firm on the age gap to allow anything to happen between them. He was too disciplined.

Not anymore though. Now he was thrusting his hips wildly, submerging himself in the hot envelope of her thighs again and again, taking her deeper and deeper into her own pleasure with every slight movement of his body.

Ari ran her hands down Arrow’s arms. They were heavily tattooed, and she thought again about how he must be a Python. Only the Pythons had that distinctive tattoo on their arms – the snake’s head bursting through the center of a flaming dollar bill. They were rebels and law-breakers. They were thieves and bandits. They were her uncle’s greatest fear. And now, her greatest weakness.

Arrow seemed to sense her looking and glanced down at his arm, grinning slightly. He whipped her around so that he was behind her, and she braced herself against the white siding of the house. They were hidden from view by the porch, but it was the most impulsive and daring thing that Ari had ever done.

She felt the friction of Arrow’s stubble, contrasting with the softness of his lips and warmth of his breath as he kissed down her back, reaching around to massage her breasts gently. She moaned, her voice soft despite the hot passion of the fire inside of her, and began to move her hips against Arrow’s inviting him to come just a little bit closer.

He plunged inside of her again, and Ari gripped the siding with a small cry. Her body was electrified by Arrow’s every movement, and as his fingers left trails of fire in their wake, so too did his lips against the soft slope of her back, all the way to the nape of her neck. She was drowning in pleasure, the dam inside of her body dangerously close to bursting. She was scared of the power there; a climax that seemed only to become more powerful the closer she got to it. And yet, she longed for it, longed to be swept away in the power of Arrow’s body and its effect on her.

He was strong, that was for sure, and she felt herself grow weightless once again as Arrow decided that he wanted her sitting down now and whisked her from the wall to the wicker patio chair. He leaned the chair back against wall forcefully as he pushed himself inside of her once again, and Ari moaned deeply, her entire body filled with pure rapture.

Arrow’s broad body moved in ways she had never considered a man could move while he made love, and again and again her climax seemed so near that she was almost afraid. But it came unexpectedly when, with a sudden force, Arrow stared her in the eye and gave one decided thrust. A shocking burst of heat erupted from inside of him, and it tipped her over the edge. Ari shouted out as her body was electrified by every pulse of Arrow’s cock as he emptied himself into her, and her orgasm was carried to new heights as he began to rock his hips slowly inside of her, gently easing her along the route of her orgasm until she was safely back, panting hard in the chair as Arrow slowly pulled out of her.

He swooped down to pull his pants back up and offered Ari his hand. She took it and he helped her to her feet, and Arrow turned his back on her so that she could dress in pe
ace.

“I don’t know if I’m all right with this,” Arrow said, his voice strained. “I don’t think we should’ve done that.”

Ari couldn’t help but go from feeling elated to deflated, and she took a step forward, half dressed, and touched Arrow’s shoulder. He flinched away from her and grabbed his shirt from the ground, and walked down the steps without looking at her.

“There are things about me you don’t know, kid. Things you wouldn’t like. I don’t think we should see each other anymore. I don’t want to hurt you.”

And with that, he was gone.

  Chapter 11

Arrow sped home as soon as his shift was done, cursing angrily at himself. What the hell was wrong with him? Ari was the sweetest young woman he had ever known, so the first thing he does is fuck her? And not to mention, she was Hawk’s niece. That could spell double trouble in the long run. What if she wanted him to spare Hawk’s life? To save him from the long arm of the law if they chose to take that route? More importantly, what if she was simply using him? Hawk was a master manipulator. There was the distinct possibility that if he let himself fall into this trap…again…terrible things were going to happen.

But something told him that Ari was just as innocent as she appeared to be, and whether he liked it or not, she was the kind of girl who deserved protection from Hawk just as much as anybody else. He hadn’t just slept with her willy-nilly for no good reason. He had slept with her because she was an incredible woman and he hadn’t been able to resist, especially not knowing that she felt the same way about him as he did about her. It had just been too much for his weak willpower to handle.

But if he could say “no” to heroin, he should certainly be able to say “no” to sex, even if it was from that incredibly beautiful girl at the ranch, with the dazzling ocean blue eyes and golden curls. She was one hell of a woman, everything he could ever hope for, if he was going to be honest with himself, but that didn’t mean that he deserved her. Shouldn’t he be with a woman he knew for sure, beyond the shadow of a doubt, wasn’t going to turn him in to his arch enemy? Shouldn’t he be able to say, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that Ari was interested in him not because he was a nice possibility to get another hopeless shmuck hooked on drugs, but because she actually found him attractive?
