"So Mr. Smith, did you know the victim?" Officer Wilkins asked.
"I knew of him," answered Deonte.
"Well, how did you know of him?"
He looked over at Keith who shook his head telling him not to say it. Deonte shrugged his shoulders and said fuck it. They already thought he did it and in their minds, he was already guilty. "He fucked my wife," he answered.
Keith just shook his head. He knew they were going to take that and run with it, they were going to use that little bit of information and try to use that against him, claiming that that was a motive for him to kill Shemar. "Even though my client’s wife had an affair with the victim, they had multiple run-ins with each other since without incident so he would have no reason to murder him."
"We have a video of you going into the victim’s barbershop the night he was murdered. What do you have to say about that?" Wilkins asked.
"He doesn't have anything to say about it." Keith spoke up.
Deonte sat back remembering the night he got a phone call that led up to all this bullshit.
It was the night after the night he had spent at Kaiah's house. Carlos had just left his house from doing their usual routine of playing the game and talking shit. Carlos wasn't even gone an hour before he was calling Deonte. "What you doing up man?"
"I fucked up D-Boy, I really fucked up," Carlos said into the phone.
"What you mean? What you do?" Deonte asked.
"I killed him," Carlos replied.
"Whoa, killed who? Scratch that? Where are you?" he asked as he jumped up.
"I'm in Miami Beach at his barbershop."
"I'm on my way man, just chill out and don't touch or do shit till I get there."
Deonte made it to Carlos in twenty five minutes. When he got there, he rushed through the front door and called Carlos’ name.
"I'm in the back," Carlos called out.
When Deonte reached the back which was the office, he shook his head. There, laying on the ground with a bullet in the back of his head was Shemar. "What the fuck happened?" Deonte asked.
"You told me how you seen those text messages in Kaiah's phone about him trying to get her to turn you in for hitting her and trying to get her to leave you and be with him. I was tired of people coming in and fucking up y'all relationship, so I took care of his bitch ass for you," answered Carlos.
Deonte was snatched out his memories by the sound of Wilkinson’s voice.
"Look man, chill out. I don't have time for this okey doke bullshit, so I'll tell you whatever you wanna know, I can even tell you the exact gun I used," Deonte said.
"You don't have to say anything," Keith said.
"It's cool, they already got the video so I might as well talk," said Deonte. He was willing to do down for his best friend. They had been through everything together and he would be damned if he snitched on him over some shit that was his fault in the first place.
If he would have just kept his dick in his pants and left Naomi's ass in the strip club where he found her, none of this shit would be happening. He was manning up and taking responsibility for his actions. Had he not cheated on Kaiah, she would have never fucked Shemar. He knew that women would only cheat on you with the nigga that could possibly replace you, and that's exactly what Shemar was trying to do.
He couldn't blame him for wanting Kaiah, who wouldn't? But he would be damned if he had let that happen. He also shouldn't have told Carlos about the shit he had seen in Kaiah's phone. If he would have known that he was going to kill him, he would have kept his mouth closed.
The other thing that was killing him was he was trying to figure out who the hell could have been following him to even record him going into the shop. That mean they would have had to have been following him since he left his house.
* * *
Even though Kaiah was pissed off with Deonte, she was still willing to help him which is why she hired Keith to be his lawyer. This right here was just a confirmation to her that she didn't want or need to be with him. If he could lie to her about not killing Shemar then there was no telling what else he could have been lying about.
By now the whole damn family was up at the police station trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Kaiah was getting pissed off about the fact that Sherae was acting like she was so distraught over the situation.
"Kaily, why is that bitch even here? What the fuck could this bitch possibly do for him?"
"Girl, please don't get me started on her ass." Kaily rolled her eyes.
Even Synai was getting pissed off. She was confused over the whole situation and just looking at Sherae wasn't making it any better.
"Will you just shut the fuck up?" Synai said to Sherae. "You don't even have a reason to be here. This is a family matter."
"I'm here because, just like everyone else here, I care for Deonte," Sherae retorted.
"Well, Deonte doesn't care about you! My family was doing perfectly fine before you came along. We were all happy until you showed up. You don't even realize how much you're tearing this family apart."
Kaiah grabbed Synai's hand to try to calm her down. "It's okay Synai."
"No Kay Kay, it's not okay. You told me to stop harboring my feelings and keeping them in, so I'm saying how I feel," Synai said.
"Alright, just try to be a little bit calmer with it because the police keep looking over here," Kaiah whispered in her ear.
"It doesn't matter because I'm done." Synai rolled her eyes.
Kaison came and sat by in between his sisters. "So what does this mean for y'all? Now is not the time for him to be getting locked up when you're carrying his child."
"I don't have a problem with raising my child by myself. As for our marriage, I'm still set on getting that divorce. I just can't be with him anymore. This relationship is starting to be too stressful and that's not good for me or the baby," Kaiah said.
"I'm still stuck on who the hell could have even known about what he was going to do so they could record him," Kaily said. In her heart she didn't believe that Deonte would do something like this. It seemed way out of his character. Now beating his ass? She would have believed that with all her heart, but she was seriously doubting that he would kill someone.
"Whoever it was had to have been following him, but the scary part is who would it be," Kaiah said.
They heard footsteps coming their way so they looked up. Kaiah was in shock, she just knew her eyes were playing tricks on her. The person walking was supposed to be dead. Kaiah's heartbeat started speeding up and she clenched her fists closed.
"Payback is a bitch, huh?" Naomi asked with a smile on her face.
