Two Knights of Indulgence

“Gaia ordered me to Germany, but sent me a message while I was in the air to meet you here at this airfield. She hired me to kill Paloma, but now it seems I have to babysit you.” Kailani paused for a second and looked over each of the three men. “From the way I see it, you guys are great bait for the bitch, so I’m trying to see this as win-win.”

Thierry turned to look at Alain and Matthias, both of whom still clasped their weapons and were ready for a fight. Never would he consider them bait.

“Paloma is Michel’s to kill. Gaia knows that. She wouldn’t hire an outsider to take Paloma down.”

“Michel fell at her hands in Spain five hundred years ago and then again a few nights ago. He’s too emotional to do the deed, whereas I’ll do the job for the right price.”

Thierry was shocked for a moment that Kailani seemed to know their history. She knew Michel had been alive hundreds of years ago. What more did she know? He kept his cool, determined not to give away his surprise by asking more questions in that vein. “Paid mercenary, I should have guessed.” Thierry’s heart sank for a moment. He had already known she was a master fighter and had killed men as he’d watched, but somehow learning she was a killer for hire made him a bit queasy.

Yet isn’t that basically what he’d been as a Templar? The church had paid him to protect the supposed innocent on their pilgrimages, killing the infidels that crossed their path? Yes, he’d been under the impression he was helping a higher power, but so was she. She yielded to the almighty dollar instead of the Almighty. Had he been so different from this woman?

Perhaps not, but he was different now. He had never taken pleasure in the kill, had never elevated it to the art form she had. She’d painted that tarmac in blood, and he’d been transfixed as he’d watched her.

“A job’s a job. I take care of the people no one else can.”

“And how do we know what you’ve told us is the truth? This could be one huge trap, and we would be playing right into your hands.”

Kailani crossed her arms over her chest and stared him down a moment. “I’m the warrior. Another piece you’ll want to fit into your new little puzzle. Unfortunately for you all, I won’t fit exactly as you expect.”

“What do you know of the story?”

“That I am supposedly one of the five to help Gaia save the world when the new Armageddon comes.”

  “New Armageddon?”

“I believe she has some great technical term for it, but I don’t recall what it was at this moment. Basically, the shit’s about to hit the fan. Again. It isn’t the first time, and it most definitely won’t be the last, but the daughters of Gaia need to protect the earth. The Illuminati are going into overdrive so they can help the coming darkness. The Middle East is a crazy shithouse right now, terrorism is on the rise, and the world markets are crashing around us. Who do you think’s to blame? The more chaos they can provide, all the better for the coming fight.”

“Good and evil have fought for years, that’s not new.”

“No, the games they play with souls are just the appetizer. According to Mother Nature, the entrée is the actual battle royale that will take place on home turf here.”

  “As in a true battle?”

“Can’t get one past you, can I? Yes, a true battle just like the humans do it. Unless we can convince them otherwise.”

  “And how does that happen?”

“Don’t get ahead of yourself, sport. For now, the plan is to take down Paloma and two other Illuminati generals as well as find the sorceress and the princess. Which reminds me, why are you headed back to Canada? Didn’t you just get here?”

Britt broke through the men and faced Kailani, looking the woman over. Thierry briefly wondered if he was about to see a catfight, especially when he saw the blue fire circling in Britt’s eyes. “We’re off for intel on a new Illuminati weapon. They may have bullets which can implant evil in people.”

Kailani looked Britt over meticulously. “If I completely believe Gaia’s line about being one of her daughters, that means I have a sister who is a blonde haired Viking.”

“I just found out this story yesterday myself, so I really hadn’t had time to consider who the others are at all.”

Kailani smirked. “Well, Healer, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“My name’s Britt, not Healer.” Britt extended a hand. Kailani took it and introduced herself as well.

“Now that that’s all over and done with, how much longer before we’re in the air?”
