  “How’s that, sheriff?” Red asked.

  Cleet Wrightman died Christmas Eve well before either of the murders.

  Red, caught off guard by surprise, fell into silence a few moments.

  “Sheriff, I hate to hear about Cleet’s passing,” the PI finally said. “Man had a rough life early on.”

  Their call ended. Red sat at his desk in thought. He got up and looked out on the street below.

  “I just hope the Bible Salesman had an easy, painless death,” he said aloud.

  The words drifted up until they wafted out an open window and dispersed among the trees of Chippewa Square.
