For anyone who thinks mishaps never occur within an organization as critical to the Public Health as the CDC, I direct you to the six vials of forgotten smallpox at a government lab, and boxes full of other less lethal materials. During testimony at a House hearing, Thomas Frieden, former director of the CDC, admitted to a pattern of safety lapses that included mishandling anthrax and flu and shipping active and potentially dangerous samples to other labs. gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CHRG-113hhrg92323/html/CHRG-113hhrg92323.htm.
My research on molecular biophysics, gene editing, and recombinant DNA was particularly eye-opening. CRISPR is real and unnerving to read about. The future has already arrived. For those unfamiliar with the topic, a good place to start is this Wired article: wired.com/2015/07/crispr-dna-editing-2.
Finally, along with my own research and visits to homeless shelters and townships, I utilized Heather Parker Lewis’s powerful account of her social work with South African street kids in Also God’s Children? (Ihilihili Press, 2007).

Thanks to Richard Marek for another amazing edit. Ryan McLemore, Rusty Dalferes, John Strout and my wife also immeasurably improved the book. Lisa Weinberg, Maria Morris, and Bill Burdick are invaluable supporters and early readers. Jaye Manus is a book formatter and all around problem solver who I could not do without. Gary Chidarikire, my brother-in-law and bon vivant, has always been a font of information on South African life, culture, and politics. Dan Ozdowski, IT expert extraordinaire, ensures the technology in my novels is germane to the twenty-first century. A special thanks to Dr. Han Kim, cardiologist with Duke University, for advice on medical issues and his patience with my persistent line of inquiry beginning with “but could it happen?”

THE SUMMONER
A United States diplomat disappears in front of hundreds of onlookers while attending a religious ceremony in the bushveld of Zimbabwe.
Dominic Grey, Diplomatic Security special agent, product of a violent childhood and a worn passport, is assigned to investigate. Aiding the investigation is Professor of Religious Phenomenology Viktor Radek, as well as Nya Mashumba, the local government liaison.
What Grey uncovers is a terrifying cult older than Western civilization, the harsh underbelly of a country in despair, a priest seemingly able to perform impossibilities, and the identity of the newest target.
