Deliver Us From Evil

The three companions gathered their things and started down the stairs of the old restaurant supply building. They met Cappo coming up the stairs from his office below. He took one look at them, his eyes raised in shock.

“How did you—?” The surprised gang leader asked.

“You act like you didn’t expect to see us return,” Kurt said.

“You caught me by surprise that’s all. I heard a noise upstairs and came to check on the portal. Did you deliver the weapon?”

“Yes,” Kurt replied. “Colonel Evans has the glaive and used it to rout the demons from the battlefield. That was just a few days ago. You should be able to begin sending weapons and support through again soon.”

“Uh, well, then. That is excellent news.”

A nagging suspicion surfaced in Kurt’s mind that the Hell’s Gate Clan leader hadn’t expected them to return.

Kurt needed to make sure of something. “You will follow your agreement, Cappo. You’ll wipe out my blood debt to the clan, right?”

“Of course, of course. I told you before. I’ve already notified the clan chapters of your change in status. You have nothing further to fear from us unless you cross our path again.”

Kurt held up his hands, palm out. “Believe me, I do not plan on getting in your clan’s way ever again.”

“Excellent, then come along and we’ll have a drink to toast your success. Then you three can return to your homes to recover from what looks to have been a harrowing experience.”

“That’s very kind of you,” Marci said. “I think we’ll take a rain check on the drink, though. I, for one, would like to get back home and get a real shower. I haven’t been clean for almost a week and I need to wash the grime of that world off me.”

“I’m with her,” Kurt said. He didn’t want to offend the gang leader by saying the last thing he wanted to do was have a friendly drink with the guy. “We’ll catch you another time.”

“Suit yourselves,” Cappo said. He walked them downstairs and to the door. He unlocked it to let the three of them out. “Farewell and thank you for making that delivery for us.”

Kurt nodded in reply. He gestured for Marci and Jonesey to precede him out the door before following them into the alley behind the building.

The trio walked around to the front, coming out only a few hundred meters from Marci’s apartment high-rise. Jonesey produced a data pad from her pouch and tapped a few commands on it.

“What are you doing?” Kurt asked.

“I’m calling an auto cab. You two will want to rest at Marci’s a bit before going your separate ways. I just want to get back to my warehouse so I can have a smoke. I hate that I can’t smoke anywhere else in this damned city.”

“Maybe you should give it up,” Kurt suggested.

“Yeah,” Marci said. “It would make it nicer for those visiting you to pick up gear.”

“I don’t care about that. I like it so I will keep it up. You two go and do whatever.” Jonesey waved her hand in the air. “I’m going home.”

An automated, driverless cab pulled up to the curb and the rear passenger door popped open. “It’s be an interesting adventure, kids. Be safe.”

Jonesey climbed in, shutting the door. The cab pulled out onto the street and drove away.

Kurt glanced at Marci. “Well, it’s just you and me.”

It surprised him when her hand drifted out and brushed against his.

“I’m not sure I’m ready to be in the apartment on my own right now. Do you mind coming up and keeping me company for a bit?”

Kurt’s emotions warred with his common sense. He knew this was crossing a line he could not return from. He thought back to how he’d felt when he thought he’d lost her to the demons.

“Sure, I’d be happy to come up with you for a bit. Maybe we can order delivery. I could use a nice Gyro and a Greek Salad from that place down the street. How about you?”

Marci’s smile lit up her face. “I’d like that a lot.”

Together, the pair walked down the sidewalk to Marci’s apartment building. Kurt’s feelings of relief at being out from under the blood debt to the biker gang mingled with the sudden joy of this new connection to Marci.

Things might be looking up for a change.

  We Need Your Help …

Without reviews indie books like this one are almost impossible to market.

Leaving a review will only take a minute — it doesn’t have to be long or involved, just a sentence or two that tells people what you liked about the book, to help other readers know why they might like it, too. It also helps us write more of what you love.

The truth is, VERY few readers leave reviews. Please help us out by being the exception.

  Thank you in advance!
