I Do, Maybe: A Novella

by Jay, Libby

“There’d better be a girl in there,” I say quietly.

Not that it really matters; I’d love this child or these children, unconditionally.

Despite mum’s reassurance she wouldn’t marry Terry, she did. I made her make him sign a pre-nuptial agreement though. They got married last year. Mum said she was too old to introduce people to Terry as her boyfriend and everyone assumed they were married so they may as well make it official.

I walked Mum down the aisle and gave her to Terry.

In spite of myself, I’m kinda fond of Terry. He has in no way replaced my father in my heart but he is a nice guy. And he loves Mum, he looks after her. What more could I ask for.

John is still single and still lives with Aunty Bree, next door to my mum. And he is still at uni; this year he’s studying environmental science. I’ve lost track of how many degrees he has. One day he might actually get a job.

As for Fraser’s brothers, Chris never remarried after divorcing Charlotte. He remains a staunch bachelor.

Ryan and Susan have three kids now and they remain happily married, as do Oliver and Claire. They never had any more kids.

The front door opens and I hear Fraser come in. He’s home early.

“Hey Piglet,” he says as he puts his keys and phone down on the kitchen bench. He joins me at the window, kisses me quickly before he looks out to his sons. “What are they doing to the dog?” he asks.

Pooch 2 is covered in leaves and flowers.

  “They’re playing,” I say.

  “They’re a handful,” Fraser sighs.

I look up at him. “Well, I hope your hands aren’t too full because we have another one, or two, on the way.”

  Fraser smiles and laughs. “Really?”

  “Yes, really.”

“God help us.” He kneels down in front of me and lifts my shirt. He presses his lips to my tummy. “There’d better be a girl in there,” he says.

I laugh as he stands up and lifts me into his arms. “Let’s celebrate,” he says as he carries me toward the staircase. I knew he’d want to celebrate.

“How long do we have before the boys notice you’re missing?”

  “Fifteen minutes,” I answer.

Fraser smiles and kisses my forehead. “I won’t need that long.”

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Libby Jay is a lover of books. She wrote her first short story at the age of 8 – a story about a family of dragons battling their enemy dragon neighbours – and during her teens wrote hundreds of other short stories and poems. Life got in the way during her twenties but finally, after the birth of her 2 gorgeous sons, she somehow found time to start writing again.

When she’s not writing, she’s either reading, baking or “working up a sweat”. Sometimes she’ll combine two of those things but has yet to combine all three.

Libby Jay lives in Melbourne, Australia with her husband and two sons.
