The Promise

That didn’t happen often.
“Yeah, but I don’t want to be waiting around for you to go,” I admitted softly. It was true. When he went, I had to go back to my life, to the reality of no job and a best friend who treated me like shit, but who would probably try to find some way to slide back into my life when this was all over.
“Then don’t,” he suggested. “Come back with me.”
“What?” I stared at him in shock.
“Come with me,” he repeated.
“Yeah, right,” I said with a grin, as if I appreciated his joke. I would have loved to go back with him, but there was no way in hell he would pick up some woman he’d spent one night with and whisk her all the way back across the world with him.
“I’m not kidding,” he replied, and I turned to face him. I was surprised at how unselfconscious I felt, even exposed in the light like this with him. Normally I would be doing everything I could to cover myself up, but he kept his hand on my waist and held me in close.
“What the hell are you talking about?” I demanded, brushing my nose against his softly and closing my eyes, letting myself get lost in this fantasy of him for a few more moments yet.
“I mean, come back with me to America.” He pulled back and looked me dead in the eyes. There wasn’t a hint of mockery in them. “I’ll pay. Just for a while…until we figure this thing between us out.”
“I…” I stared at him for a long moment. I had no job to go back to, my best friend had proved herself to be a completely selfish bitch, and this gorgeous man with whom I’d shared the craziest night of my life had just invited me to travel across the world with him, on his dollar.
I blinked at him. No. I couldn’t. I didn’t know him from Adam. Could I?
I had told myself that I couldn’t do this. That I couldn’t go to this show, or stand up to Eleanor, or get up on stage with him, or touch him, or make love to him, but I had done all of that. And it had brought me here. Why the hell should I stop now? With a rush of nerves and excitement, I nodded.
“I’ll do it,” I agreed, a smile half-a-mile wide spreading over my face.
“Seriously?” His face lit up. “You’ll come back with me?”
“Just for a while,” I warned. “Just to see how it goes-”
“Obviously,” he scooped me off my feet and laid me down on the bed, and slid on top of me. Instantly, my heart-rate went through the roof. Nuzzling into my neck, he continued. “Just for a while or,” he repeated my words back to me.
Then began to kiss down my chest and over my stomach, and before I knew it, I was completely lost to this man once more. I wasn’t sure whether I had just made an amazing decision or a bat-shit crazy one, but in the throes of ecstasy, as if from far away I heard his voice say, “Just for a while, or until you get it, that you are mine. All mine. Forever.”
