Olivia nods at him, trying not to smirk. “Okay, if you say so.”
He smiles back at her, knowing exactly why his son loves her so much.
Ethan plays the last chord of the song and Katelyn suddenly puts her hand around the neck of the guitar and tries to tug it out of Ethan’s hands. Reluctantly, he releases it. “Be careful, Ladybug.” She tries to lay it down on the stairs carefully, sticking her tongue out as she concentrates on her task. She looks up and smiles at one of the band members, who comes to her aid and takes it from her.
Many layers of crinoline under her dress make it difficult for her to climb onto Ethan’s lap. He lifts her, folding the dress beneath her, and sits her firmly on his knee. She holds his face in her little hands and puckers her lips, leaning in to give him a kiss. “I love you, Daddy.” She lays her head on his chest and wraps her arms around him again. Ethan looks over at Olivia and they exchange a knowing look. Katelyn’s brown curly hair and hazel eyes mirror her mother’s appearance, but that’s the only thing they have in common. Everything else about Katelyn’s personality, in every way, is exactly like her father. She’s the daughter that he was denied in many past lives, and they share a special bond that no one could truly understand. Except for Olivia of course, who blows her soul mate a kiss through the crowd.
The evening ends with Olivia taking her place beside Ethan at the piano for the traditional singing of Silent Night as the evening’s last song. The orchestra strikes up the most beautiful arrangement of the song, heavy on the string section. He had never really noticed just how beautiful her singing voice is. As the intensity of the music grows, Ethan chimes in his part of the song. They fit perfectly together. Ethan knows, like he always has, that he’ll follow her faithfully into every life.
At the end of the evening, Ethan carries Katelyn out of the grand ballroom, wrapped in a blanket and sound asleep. She’ll go on to do great things in her life. No one would expect anything less from the daughter of Ethan O’Connell. Her heart is so pure, she’ll become the pilot light that keeps the family together and the love glowing during the difficult times that families sometimes have. Olivia wonders if Katelyn will find her soul mate in this life and prays that she does. Although she does feel sorry for any boy that shows up at house and has to face the wrath of her father, Ethan O’Connell-The Mighty Wolf.
As promised at the end of the evening, Olivia puts Katelyn and Christopher into the car seats of Nana and Poppa’s van. There’s been a naughty little fantasy gnawing at her all night, and she can’t wait to get her man home.
