"Did you kill Belinda Morning?"
The reaction was startling. "God, now there was a woman. I wanted her. I gave her everything. I've never had a woman who could make me feel so powerful, so strong. Having her was like being a drug addict, the more I touched her, the more I needed her. She was worth every red cent. Damn I hated killing her. I thought she cared for me. I wanted her to become my wife, but she turned it into a joke. She was too smart and when I found out that she had learned about my twin brother and knew what I had done, it wasn't safe to let her live.
God must have cursed me to kill such a beautiful creature. She could have had anything. She made me feel young again as she allowed me to explore her perfect body, but she had to die. I had a man watching her and when she met you the night you met with the General, I knew she had to be eliminated. I killed her myself, crying as I choked her. She was the only woman I've ever loved and then she betrayed me. Now you two are the only ones left who can link me to the past. Then finally I'll find peace, even though I've lost everyone I've ever cared about, Belinda and my brother. No longer will I dread the past. God, I hate you both!"
He raised his arm and pointed the revolver at Sarah. The thin sheet gave no protection and a look of helplessness filled her face.
"Goodbye Sarah Redbourne!" His fingers started to squeeze the trigger, but then he staggered. He turned and looked at Jake and a look of total surprise and incomprehension came over him. He looked down at his chest and saw the blood spurting over his chest. It spread like a torrent as it pumped out his life.
He tried to say something; he tried to raise his revolver, but there was no strength in his arm.
Jake watched him fall. The last thing the Joint Chief of Staff for the United States Armed Forces saw was a dagger. An ancient dagger now freshly stained red with his blood. His mind recorded the fact that this dagger was different and it appeared to be old, far too old and then he felt nothing.
