“Kate, I hate to say it, but Roger will probably look for you at the other Nordstroms. He’ll assume you transferred instead of quitting your job,” Mitch said, plopping down on Kate’s overstuffed chair. Charlie sat on the arm of the chair and Mitch wrapped his arms around her.

“Have you told Neil yet?” Charlie asked.

As if on cue, Kate’s phone rang. It was Neil. She managed to shake her head and Charlie nodded. “Come on, Mitch. Let’s give her some privacy.”

Kate pressed the receive button. Before she could speak, Neil said, “Good evening, my beauty. I’ve been thinking about you all day.”

“Hi, honey,” she said, feeling overwrought from the day’s events.

“What’s wrong? Did something else happen with Roger?”

She explained to Neil what had happened. He was furious.

“Damn it. I wish you were here with me right now. I can’t wait for you to be away from this guy.”

“I know, me too. I managed to convince Roger I was feeling very sick. He’s going to keep his distance. He leaves for Germany tomorrow. I want to come over, but if I leave now he’s going to know and become suspicious. He might follow me and I don’t want to do anything that will make him act out or hurt anyone else. I need to keep treating him carefully.”

“You’re right. I can’t stand he’s trying to weasel his way into your life. As soon as he’s gone, we’ll figure it all out. My top priority is to make you feel safe again. I love you, baby. I want you to be safe.”

“I do feel safe and protected by you. I love that you’re looking out for me. I’m so lucky to have you in my life.”

“I’m the lucky one, my beauty.”

  CHAPTER TWENTY

  Roger

On Roger’s return flight, he thought about seeing his son. Visiting Jacob and his ex-girlfriend had been what he needed. During their month together, he convinced Paulina it’d be best for Jacob to have a dad in his life. Things hadn’t been going well for her. It had been difficult for her to keep a job and her dating prospects were limited since she was a devoted mother. So it was easy to get her to agree to move back to the States. Roger promised to help her find a job and told her she and Jacob could live with him until she got on her feet.

He figured he could get Paulina to have sex with him whenever he wanted, plus have Jacob nearby. She was much more sexually free. Paulina had a great body that he was all too familiar with it. He remembered with great excitement some of their romps in the hay.

The only problem was it’d take time for her to get her affairs in order. Her plan was to move to America in three to six months.

Now he had to come up with a plan to woo Kate before Paulina arrived. This could be interesting. He hadn’t ever had two women on a string before. Thinking about having both of them in his bed made him very aroused. In his perfect world, he’d have them both in his bed at the same time. Sadly, he knew Kate would never go for something like that. Paulina, on the other hand, might consider it. Fantasies were one thing, but his reality was going to be with Kate.

Although it had been a difficult choice at the time, he knew now he’d made the right decision in getting rid of Rose. So far, the police had nothing on him, and despite the fact there was the possibility of being caught—even though he was very good at getting rid of the evidence—he felt assured. He’d covered his tracks well. Having her money had come in handy for his trip. He looked at it as her final gift to him. She’d always been the giving one in their relationship. It was her nature and he was more than happy to receive.

The chances of Mark’s body being found were slim to none. Even though eliminating Mark had been a spur-of-the-moment decision, hiding a body in the East County had worked before, so he didn’t doubt it’d work again.

  ***

Once Roger’s flight finally landed, he got a cab and was on his way to Kate. Maybe she’d wake up and invite him into her bed. Tonight could be the night he finally got to fuck her. Well, a guy could hope. It was about midnight and he figured she was probably sleeping. After quietly climbing the stairs and taking a quick shower, he grabbed his master key. To ensure there was no sign of movement, he listened at the door, waiting a full three minutes to make sure she and Charlie were sleeping. He turned the key slowly and quietly pushed the door open. He had a lot of practice sneaking up on people so he knew they wouldn’t hear him. The apartment seemed different, but he wasn’t sure how. It was really dark, so it was hard to tell at first what had changed. Approaching Kate’s bedroom, his eyes finally began to adjust to the darkness. Her room was empty. She was gone. He walked right in and found nothing. No bed, dresser, nightstand. He put the light on in the closet and realized her room was completely vacant. He searched the rest of the apartment and found it empty as well.

He was furious. How dare she leave without telling him. What did this mean? Did she think he was guilty? The only thing he was guilty of was getting Rose out of the way so they could be together. Why wouldn’t she understand that?

He was enraged. He wanted to hurt someone. He wanted to hurt them badly. Perhaps at the nearest bar, where he decided he’d go, there would be a guy drunk enough he could beat up on or worse. Getting out his aggressions was really important right now. He wanted to be calm when he found Kate, convince her they belonged together. He had to make her listen. I will find her no matter what it takes!

  Will Roger find Kate?

Will Neil be able to protect her?

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Carlie Sexton has had a passion for reading her entire life. She loves it so that she dedicated her life to educating children. As a teacher, she’s had the profound pleasure of teaching children to read and explore their imaginations through a good book.

Actually writing a book of her own seemed like a pipe dream, until she was encouraged by a dear author friend. Thus began the journey of her first book, Fallen for You. Initially meant to be a stand-alone novel, it grew into three novels with two spinoffs. It has been an incredible journey to pour herself into her characters and bring them to life through her stories

When she’s not teaching or writing, Carlie enjoys working out, playing with her dogs, going to the movies, the beach, the mountains, and…of course, meeting readers at signings!

Thank you so much for reading my very first book. Please leave a review on Amazon if you get the chance.
