I had found Stan, but had lost so many more. We had lost Easter and Archie. Trevan and Lily, Boa, the Reverend and Shelly Mac with the children, Harper and Mikey were all back there in the woods, still trying to escape the village. The new plague, the zeroes that were resistant to my virus, was upon them. Without my protection, the horde that was moving in would surely wipe out all those left behind, just like Zeke’s plan.
The Professor flew across the treetops, over roads and rivers, and through abandoned towns. All the while we saw no sign of human life, only the undead. The zeroes would look up when we flew over them and reach out for us in a hunger-filled salute, but we kept going.
We would run out of gas soon, and then we would land. But where would we be? I looked toward Zeke in the front, Eliza’s bite mark still visible and then to Huck next to me. My virus had saved us for so many months, but it had the potential to kill the ones I loved. I loved Huck and liked Stan, but my fate was sealed with the one I hated—Zeke.
