About the Author
Introduction
Each book in the Gritt Family Stories Series can be read as a standalone. Nevertheless, to really enjoy this book, I recommend you read Heartbroken – Alane and Aaron’s story and Forsaken – Chris and Salomé’s story beforehand.
To know more about Dex Crawford and Luke Gritt, you can read Often & Suddenly - Angels and Sunshine Series Book 3.
BLURB:
There are a lot of things I don’t want in life:
Being without a home.
Sharing custody of my four-year-old with my ex.
And anything to do with Barnabas Gritt, AKA Springs Falls Casanova, and my daughter’s favorite person in the world.
Of course, he has to be a superhero and save me from being homeless.
And of course, I’m expected to fall for him the same way everyone else does.
But I won’t go down without a fight—maybe only with a few kisses.
I don’t make promises, not anymore.
Most women in town know the deal and enjoy what I have to offer.
No complaints.
Only stuck-up Avery judges me for it.
But when she blurts out that we’re together when we obviously aren’t, she opens the door to a possibility neither of us are ready to explore.
And if her daughter already has me under her spell, it only takes me one kiss, to fall hard for the last person I expected.

“Chug, chug, chug, chug, chug, chug oooh chuuuuug!”
The bar erupts chanting as if we lived in a frat town.
“I fucking hate this place,” I tell Donna while reaching for the poor excuse of a beer this bar serves.
“No, you don’t. Come on, it’s THE one night a week you get a drink, just relax.”
“Barn!” One of the frat boys of Springs Falls screams. “Did you see how fast I chugged that beer?”
The infamous Barnabas Gritt lifts a thumb over his shoulder, telling his buddy he did a good job, even if he didn’t see anything. He’s too busy checking the back of the throat of a tourist staying at his adventure camp to really know what’s going on around him, but it’s easy to tell as it’s always the same shit, over and over. I come out once a week, and the same scenario plays in front of my eyes.
Barnabas, Mr. Town Slut, tongue fucking a tourist, a barmaid, or anything female, before leaving and fucking her for good. His best friend, Andrew, circling around the women who hoped to get Barnabas’ dick but always settle for his second in command after being hot and bothered all night by the town’s slut shenanigans. That’s what happens when thirty-something people get stuck in a hole.
“He’s so fucking disgusting,” I scowl, taking my eyes off Barnabas and looking through the window. Unfortunately, I can see the reflection of the couple in it. He’s now grinding against her, licking her neck, while she grabs his perfect thick and shiny hair. If there is one thing I want from Barnabas, it’s his sun-kissed blond mane that he ties in a ridiculous man bun most of the time. I would die to have hair like him instead of the thin red crappy mop piled on my head.
“Hmm,” my best friend moans. “If you had fucked him, Ave, you wouldn’t find it disgusting. Why do you think most come back and hope they’ll be the next one? That guy’s dick is magic. He knows how to use it, and he has this…”
“Stop!” I raise my hand. “You know the deal. I don’t want to hear anything about the town slut’s dick.” The way she moves on her chair, I think she’s coming just thinking about it.
And that’s wherein lies the problem in our town.
Springs Falls. Female population over eighteen: a little more than five thousand. Female population who haven’t been in Barnabas’ bed: FIVE. His mom, his sister, his sister-in-law, his niece, and me. I think even my mom has been pleasured by Barnabas. The guy doesn’t care if the woman attached to the pussy could be the age of his mother. He fucks it all. There are rumors that he’s responsible for a numerous amount of heart attacks at the nursing home, making grandmothers orgasm just by looking at them. There are also rumors that’s why he started his adventure camp: to bring fresh pussy home. When you come to Gritt Your Adventure, you are going to come for the adventure. I know, I work there. You’re supposed to challenge yourself by climbing while blinded or hiking mountains, but you’ll climb to seventh heaven and hike his pole faster than you’ll have time to get to your room, blindfolded or not. It seems the guy knows how to get in women’s panties, or that’s what rumor says.r />
“No offense, but I don’t want to be one of the women having gotten ‘Barned.’” I quote with my finger. In our town, he even has a verb attached to his name.
‘To get Barned’: having gotten laid by Barnabas Gritt...
“Don’t say you don’t like the dick until you’ve tried it. Seriously, Barn is exactly what you need. He’s fun. He fucks well, and he doesn’t want a relationship. You could get fucked at work whenever you want, and the guy would do wonders for your mood. Why you wouldn’t want to jump that, is beyond me?” She points at him, and if I’m not mistaken, she has some drool on her chin. I roll my eyes. “Pretty sure Mr. Town Slut doesn’t want to fuck me. We don’t have the best relationship.” Let’s just say when his sister left town and asked me to take over the wedding planning business, she left behind two years worth of bookings. Barnabas wasn’t happy. I don’t know why, and I don’t care, but he kept pestering me not to take on more weddings. I agreed we should slow down the wedding planning at the farm, especially now that the barn where we hold most of the ceremonies is where he lives. I’ll continue the wedding planning business but just not at the Gritt’s farm every weekend. Springs Falls is charming enough to have weddings in other places. We are in the heart of the Adirondacks after all.
“Ladies,” Andrew slides next to Donna, “can I do anything for you tonight?”
“Where is Mel?” I ask him about his sister who is the photographer for each event and a good friend of mine and Donna’s.
“Where do you think she is?” He nods toward the bar where Mel is hanging onto the lips of the barman, Jake, the other best friend of Barnabas.
“Back together?” Donna asks, already playing with Andrew’s hair. Fuck, this town is sex-crazed. I think that’s what happens when you're raised by ex-hippies. Every time I come out, Andrew and Donna end up together. Well, if Donna is not leaving with Barnabas. They fuck each other’s brains out while smoking weed and drinking, or so I heard. Melissa is generally with Jake, except if they are on a break. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn they have orgies or some kind of other kink party. Of course, I was never invited. I’m known as 'stuck-up Ave,' and I generally end up going home to my daughter, alone...
“Where is the mister?” Andrew smirks. I flip him the bird.
“Still hasn’t left his wife for you and the kiddo?” he adds in a sardonic tone. It’s no secret in town that I fucked up bad. I was in a relationship with a married man, believing the promises that he would leave his wife for me. Truly hoping it would happen when I got pregnant. Still trusting him when I gave birth. Four years later, he’s the Santa of my childhood: a big, fat disappointing lie. The world where Alexis’ father leaves his wife for both of us doesn’t exist. I was stupid to believe him for so long. His wife knew what happened but decided to keep him. I’m the slut.
“Don’t be a dick.” Barnabas sits next to me, invading my personal space.
“Because only you are allowed to be one to me?” I answer back. But he’s already ignoring me. The girl straddles his lap, and they continue their make-out session right next to where I’m sitting. Why he needs to be so close to me and heavily pet a woman, almost sitting on my lap, is outside my realm of comprehension, like a lot of things Barnabas does.
“Can you do that somewhere else, Barnabas?” I scoff. He raises his index finger to tell me to wait and pulls on the lower lip of his prey with his teeth. Then he turns to me. His eyes bore inside mine.
“Jealous?” He smirks. “Say the words, Ave, and you know you’ll get some.” He brings his hand to my chin, but I back away, not willing his fingers anywhere near me.
“Now, where were we beautiful?” He gives back his attention to the tourist and sucks the soul out of her brain.
Donna and Andrew are watching them, and from the movement of their arms under the table, they are touching each other. I don’t know why I go out with her anymore. I don’t need to hang out with these people when I could be home with a good book. Standing, I climb on the seat and walk on the table to get out of the corner Barnabas kept me in. My heels knocked down a couple of glasses, but I don’t give a shit. The tourist shrieks, surely wondering where the wet feeling on her thigh came from. I jump on the floor.
“Come on, Ave, don’t go,” Donna complains. I look over at Mel sucking face with Jake, then back at Donna fondling Andrew under the table and shake my head.
“Yeah, darling,” Barnabas snarls, “don’t go...” I roll my eyes again, my usual reaction in his presence, and come closer to the woman on his lap.
“The wetness you just felt? Barnabas already came. Did you see any woman in the bar talking to him before you arrived? No, right?” She shakes her head. “It’s because we all know he comes faster than a fifteen-year-old and has the dick of a toddler. Don’t waste your time, honey. He’s all tongue but no game.” I shrug and tap on Barnabas’ head before turning my back to my so-called friends and walk out the door.
I’m just a few steps outside when Barnabas calls my name.
“Avery? What’s your fucking problem with me?” he roars, catching up to me.
“Nothing, you just disgust me. You’re a fucking gorilla. One male, several females. You reduce every woman I know, even the smartest ones, to sex-craved pussies! I despise you!”
He chuckles, and it angers me even more. That’s the other thing with Barnabas, he never takes anything serious, especially me.
“That’s a lot of feelings toward me, Ave. I would like to fuck you too, you know. Just ask, and you’ll get it.” He winks. I want to slap him.
“Go fuck yourself!” I scream, heading to my car.
“No need, I have a hot tourist waiting for me. I’d prefer to be buried in you, but...”
I get in my car enraged and drive home, all riled up as usual after arguing with him.
Coming in, I find my mother on the sofa, reading one of her clean romance books. Since my father died twenty years ago, she reads romance novels and maybe fucks Barnabas from time to time. I don’t know. I don’t want to know. My sister Lou left for Montana when she was twenty and never came back. I had left but came back here, getting one small job after another until I started to work with Salomé Gritt planning weddings. A simple life in a shit town. I came back because my mother needed me after my father died. My sister left because she couldn’t handle our mother’s cries.
“How was it?” She puts her book down and smiles.
“Same old.” I remove my coat and hang it on the shaky hook I need to repair.
“Was Barnabas there?” She asks me about him every single day. I loathe it.
“Yep. New girl tonight. One of his clients. I’m pretty sure the Yelp review includes the service the owner renders.”
My mother blushes. “He’s a good person, Avery. Maybe you would see that if you would remove your hate-goggles.”
“He’s a manwhore, a man-child, and an asshole, and maybe you would see that if you would remove your orgasm-goggles.”
“You’re ridiculous,” she scoffs. “What would an old bat like me do with someone as young as him? I had my fun with his dad, you know. Don’t need the son.” Marybeth 1. Avery 0.
My parents were part of the seventies swinger crowd of Springs Falls. Most of the people moved away after the lifestyle went out-of-date, but my parents and the Gritts stayed, and my mother was never shy to tell me what happened at those parties. So, I do know that my mother had sex with Ridge Gritt, and my dad, may he rest in peace, with Bella Gritt... And I do throw up a little every time I think about it. Especially, because I work with the Gritts, and Bella and my mother are very close friends.
“I mean, in his time, Ridge was...”
I raise my hand in defense. “Please, Mom. I really don’t want to know.”
How that conservative older woman who reads clean romance was once having sex with another couple is also something I can’t understand. That’s why I wanted to become a vet before my plans went to hell. I much prefer dealing with animals than humans.
“Before I leave, there is something you should know...”
“Is Alexis okay?” Guilt eats at me for not asking first thing when I came in.
“Yes, but Noah came by. He said that because his wife technically owns the building, she wants you out by the end of the month...” I look around puzzled. Noah is my ex. The asshole I was in love with for a long time.
“What? Can they do that?”
“I don’t know. I think you should talk to Bella’s son-in-law, Dex. You know he’s a lawyer, right? Maybe he can help?”
“But what am I going to do? There is no place to rent in town. It’s freaking summer, and the tourists have invaded us.”
“I wish I could help, but my little condo is too small for the three of us.”
“I know, Mom.” My mother had to sell our childhood home because of an inadequate investment and now lives in a rat hole. In fact, she spends a lot of time at my place, particularly when I need a sitter for events or when I have to meet clients outside of preschool hours. When she can’t, Alexis spends time at the farm with Bella and sometimes Barnabas.
“I know of a place...” Her tone of voice is already telling me I’m going to hate it.
“Where?” I sigh.
“Bella has the room, and Alexis loves it there. It would be perfect for your work. Let me call her.” I don’t have time to protest before she’s already on the phone with her longtime friend. I’m fucked. When Marybeth Dubois decides something, I never back out. I can’t hurt my mother. Never have and never will. By the end of the week, I’ll be living at the Gritts, with Barnabas as my neighbor, and the moans of his conquests as a playlist. Welcome to Hotel Californication.
