  “How so?”

  “Anything can happen—minds can change, scientific breakthroughs. The future is wide open, so why predetermine it?” Ten was pathetically optimistic these days. Aggie had given him hope, and he held onto it with both hands. “Speakin’ of, I think we could use a vacation. What do you think?”

  “I can get away from work since I’m the boss and all.” Aggie still ran her private detective agency, although she didn’t have a partner any longer, for obvious reasons. “Where do you wanna go?”

  “The Smoky Mountains are picturesque this time of year. Why don’t we rent a cabin and stay a couple of weeks?”

  “Just tell me when and I’ll be there.”

  “How about next week?” Ten wrapped his arms around Aggie and kissed her breathless.

  Discarded on the countertop behind them, were Ten’s shades. He no longer needed to hide himself from anyone.
