ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Susan L. Schulman has been a theatrical press agent for more than 40 years, handling Broadway and Off-Broadway plays and musicals, not-for-profit arts institutions, individual personalities, and special events. A native New Yorker, she was a ‘theatre kid’ who hung around stage doors while attending Hunter College Elementary School and Hunter High School.
After graduating from NYU with degrees in Theatre and English and earning a Masters degree in Theat
re Arts from Columbia University, Susan worked at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, United Artists and WNET/Channel 13, and apprenticed with several top Broadway press agents, before joining the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers. Susan’s many Broadway productions include Johnny Mercer’s DREAM; Bob Fosse’s DANCIN’; Rodgers & Hammerstein’s STATE FAIR; Lauren Bacall in APPLAUSE; George C. Scott in SLY FOX and DEATH OF A SALESMAN; Jim Dale in SCAPINO; Glenn Close, Richard Dreyfuss and Gene Hackman in DEATH AND THE MAIDEN; Alec Baldwin and Jessica Lange in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE; and John Lithgow and George Segal in REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT.
In addition to working with some of Broadway’s brightest stars as individual clients, Susan has handled many arts institutions including the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Feld Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Circle in the Square, Phoenix Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club, and Repertorio Español and has headed public relations/corporate communications departments at USA Network, A&E (Arts & Entertainment Network) and CBS-TV Entertainment. As an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of the Arts, she created and taught a course in theatrical publicity and audience development, and she often lectures about the theatre and public relations. And yes, there really ARE three Susan Schulmans in the theatre — Broadway press agent Susan L. Schulman should not be confused with the Tony-nominated director Susan H.
